Outlook 2010 won't store deleted items locally only on webserver

I am using outlook 2010 on my computer as email software. My email provider is godaddy.com (secureserver.net). I've done a variety of searched but can't find my problem directly. When deleting emails, up until last month everything worked fine, deleted emails went into the trash folder in outlook, could call them up, review them, restore them or perm delete them. Not sure what changed, but now when I delete an email it is gone from my computer (outlook), the last trash folder email saved was 12/18/14. However if I on online and login in through the godaddy.com website, anything I recently deleted can be seen in the trash folder online. I've checked in outlook - account settings - and under store deleted items in xxx folder on the server, trash is selected. But why will it only save to the website server and not locally in outlook?? And it was doing just fine. I did one brief period, and the timing might be right, where outlook through up a data file error and wouldn't load my emails, but that got fixed, and emails work fine except where the deletes go. Any thoughts?

Hi ryanzoo06, welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

The screen shot below may help fix your problem as I assume your emails are being deleted when you exit Outlook. This is from Outlook 2013 but I think it is the same as 2010.
To make this adjustment, open Outlook, select File, then Advanced & refer to the unticking where shown.

As a further precaution to prevent accidental deleting of deleted emails, go right down to the bottom of the Advanced window to Other & tick Prompt for Confirmation before Permanently Deleting items.

Mail is normally retained on the mail server for a period of time, so that is the reason they are still there.

Thanks Ranger4,

Actually - it doesn't have to do with closing/exiting outlook. Any time I select an email and click delete. For 3 months that I have used this computer/outlook setup everything deleted went right to the trash folder (deleted Items folder) in outlook, normal procedure and only was permanently removed/deleted if I emptied the trash folder. It's only been in the last month that it stopped sending deleted emails there. I thought they were being permanently deleted immediately until I logged on to the provider website - godaddy.com web email site to check and see what emails were doing and found everything I had deleted over the last month were infact in the trash folder - on the web site. Which is weird, it's like it took the statement literally in settings: "select which folder to store deleted items in on the server - and saved them "on" the server, but not locally in outlook. Can't figure out how or why this would change, unless I missed a famous microsoft or other update that caused the change???

You could try a repair on your email account. To do that open Outlook, select File, then Account Settings & there you should find a sub heading under email that says Repair. I have not had to use that so I don't know whether it will work, but might be worth a try.

Where does the attached image that you included in your post #3 come from?. Could you attach a screen shot of your actual Outlook folders as they appear when you open Outlook.
I have shown a screen shot of mine for your info.
From what you have described about your problem it does seem that Outlook can't find your Deleted Items folder so it is not saving them at all.

I attached a screenshot of when Outlook is open. The first screenshot was from Acct settings -> more settings -> Deleted Items. From this screenshot you can see the deleted folder, which is the one currently selected for deleted items to go to. There is also a trash folder (not shown, sorry too long a list of folders!), did have that selected, doesn't matter whether it's the trash folder or deleted folder, same thing happens - disappears from outlook but can be found on the webserver interface in the trash folder (tested both options multiple ways).

There are differences between Outlook 2013, which I use & your Outlook 2010. You certainly have a lot of folders on your Home page. The list I posted from the screen shot in my post #6 is all the folders I have on the home page. I did not include the main email account folder, just the folders within that account folder. I do have 2 email accounts & the other one has the same folder layout but under the other email account folder.
I only showed the folder list & if I select one of the folders then the contents are shown on the reading pane.

Have you thought about cleaning up all those folders & reducing the list a bit. Perhaps you could just have a few main folders with sub folders within the main ones. But that is up to you, I am only making a few suggestions.

How are you deleting your emails?. If you use the Shift+Del key to delete them then they will not be saved to Deleted Items folder, they will be completely deleted from Outlook, but they should stay on the server.

Usually just hit the delete key, or select select from tab. Didn't know shift + delete did anything. I have not arrived at any other alternative yet personally. But I do appreciate your diligence.

You have to go to the delete option and then hit the delete button. Then you have to ensure that you want to delete it and hit the yes button. After this it will be deleted.

Thanks, but the issue isn't being able to delete items, it's when you delete something having it go into a trash folder or deleted items folder so that while the item is no longer in your inbox, it is not yet permanently deleted, just in case I realize I might need it afterall. Right now it does not do that, the emails are permanently deleted immediately (in Outlook, locally on the computer). What I was mentioning previously was, while most people don't use the option, when I am not at my computer, I can still access my emails by going to the email server website on any computer, log in and see my emails. And ironically anything I deleted while reading emails via outlook on my computer is actually sitting in the trash folder on the website. So I couldn't figure out why the deletes were being placed in the trash folder on the server's website, but not locally on my computer in my outlook's trash folder (even though it was selected to do so correctly).

Thanks again, for the assistance
