Hi there
Has anybody managed to get round the problem of bypassing the TEST SEND / RECEIVE e when setting up new EMAIL accounts on OUTLOOK 2013.

If you are AWAY from your home ISP you can't always SEND --a lot of ISP's block SEND mail unless you are actually logged on to their service or use their webmail facility.

With OUTLOOK 2010 you can disable the TEST SEND / RECEIVE email so you can still SET UP the account.

OUTLOOK 2013 fails because the TEST SEND fails and you can't skip the test.

screenshot of outlook 2010 enc

in 2013 this option doesn't exist -- so I've been unable to set up my Home email account until I get home.

Seems to me a STUPID new feature -- often one wants to set up stuff when away from home -- and test it later.

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo, most SMTP servers won't allow you to use port 25 unless they are your ISP. I use port 587 or 2525
to setup my outlook so that I can send and receive while away.

Hi there

Port 2525 is also blocked.

However this isn't the point. The whole point of the post was to say that you CAN'T disable the TEST ACCOUNT SETTINGS and because the test account fails (can't send) Outlook 2013 won't set up the account.

Outlook 2010 allows you to skip the test account settings as the attachment in my previous post shows.

(Outlook 2013 version I'm testing was the one I've downloaded from TechNet).

Here's an article I found about this issue...
You indeed need to configure the account when you are connected to the Internet. If you are using a public hotspot or any connection other than directly to your ISP, you'll need to enable authentication for your outgoing server.
Cannot disable TEST email settings so cannot set up an account in outlook 2013

Hope this helps,
David

Hi David
that was actually MY Post on that site. Enabling / disabling authentication doesn't alter the block on ports 25 / 2525 by some smtp servers when you aren't logged on to your own ISP.

(Connections via EXCHANGE servers are OK since these are work accounts which work properly).

So it seems unlike 2010 you DO need to have a valid working Outlook connection.

IMO that's a STEP BACKWARDS -- many times you need to set stuff up WITHOUT being logged on to the internet -- the real connections can be tested later.

This for me makes OUTLOOK 2013 a NO NO as it means I have to have a "Working account" before I can create one.

Chicken and Egg scenario anyone ??

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jimbo,

It's kinda funny that the thread I found is pointing you back to your own post!
Now I know for sure I'm really going in circles.
I wonder if the "disabled check-box" is a new feature or a bug in Outlook 2013...

The only other thing I can think of is, if you are using a Standard Account when setting up the email, try temporarily making the account an Administrator and see if the TEST check-box can be disabled.

I know that's a long shot, but I've seen where some programs / settings don't work correctly with a Standard account.

I have Outlook 2010 and don't have Outlook 2013, so I can't play around with this.

I think this is rather stupid to neglect such a feature. Sometimes you just want to setup something for someone else and you have no internet connection. What's more, using POP3 account configuration the option IS available! Strange...

I wonder if this is a bug or MS have some intricate reason for the absence of the checkbox...

Also, you cannot setup read-only accounts this way, since it insists a test message be sent.
Second, when you want to make just a small change to your account settings it still needs to send and receive a test message, which makes it takes longer to save settings and clutters the inbox with test messages, requiring cleanup etc.

I had a problem with my RoadRunner POP3 (ISP) e-mail account, with Outlook 2003, that I tried to set up on a trip. As it turned out what I was using for User Name (just my name) was OK for a direct ISP connection, but on a remote connection it needed the complete e-mail user account name.

It seems they finally added the checkbox back in. I think it was in the latest service pack. What an unnecessary aggravation was this...

Maybe now I consider using Outlook for another year, before switching to Thunderbird.

Hi there
I tried a few weeks ago -- anyway I DON'T like office 2013 -- I hate the way for example EXCEL 2013 starts - it doesn't quite know if it's a Metro app or a desktop one -- total case of Schizophrenia !!.

Anyway thanks for all the replies -- gone back to Office 2010 -- and might change to thunderbird -- another good email client.

Cheers
jimbo

Correction, they added the checkbox again, but now it is grayed out. Way to go Microsoft...

I guess I will now stick to Thunderbird as my main client and use Outlook only for my saved PST files.
