Solved Outlook 2013 email now pops out instead of displaying preview in panel

Within the past week when I click on an email in Outlook 2013 Inbox, instead of simply displaying a preview of the text within the preview panel, it now pops out the email in a new window.

How can I switch this behaviour off? And why did it start happening?

I have already tried “File, Options, Mail, ‘replies/forwards’ untick open replies/forwards in new window.

However, I am not even trying to reply to the email. I simply click on it to read the preview.

Any advice appreciated.

Dave

Are you sure your'e not accidentally double clicking on the new email to view it. On my Outlook 2013 if I double click an email it will open in a new window, but just a single click with open the reading panel & not a new window.

Thanks for the suggestion Ranger,
No I am definitely single clicking.

Have been using this Outlook 2013 over 1 year, and always it just brings up the text in the preview panel...... but for some reason now opens the email that I simply want to view in a new window. Very annoying when I am simply scanning emails... and then have to close each window before looking at the next email.

I am using Windows 7, and have set it up so that I single-click to open a file. But I have also had this setting over a year.

Has anyone seen this behaviour of Outlook 2013 opening an email in a new window when one simply 'single clicks' on the email?

Dave

Thanks for getting back. I actually still use the "double click" method to open files. I have tried "single click" but I feel double click seems to open files marginally faster.
Perhaps you could experiment with trying a double click to see if that changes your system.
You could try repairing Office. Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office, Right Click on it & select Change, this will open a couple of Repair Options for you to try.

Hi Ranger,
I must admit that I was sceptical about your suggestion that changing the Windows 7 click back to double click for opening files could affect this Outlook behaviour.

But I tried it anyhow.... and am surprised to see that so far no emails have opened in a new window in Outlook when I click on them.

It's early days and I have only tried this for a short time, so will let you know how I get on.

I will also look at running the Repair on Office ...... and setting back to single click at some stage (because for me this flows much better than having to double click every time i want to open a file) ..... and see if the problem stays away.

So thank you for your suggestion, and fingers crossed that is the solution.

Best Wishes,
Dave

Hi Ranger,
I replied too soon.

A couple more emails opened in pop up window when I clicked on them.

It's a strange one. It does not happen all the time when I click on an email.... only sometimes.

I am beginning to think it may be the mouse is somehow double clicking sometimes instead of single clicking.

Outside Outlook in Windows 7, a couple of Chrome windows have opened full screen recently when I clicked on the title bar with the intention of dragging them to move them. I have only realized that this has happened and now putting the two behaviours together....

I went into Control Panel and Ease centre, to make sure I had the speed setting correct for the mouse click.... but that all looks ok.

I am starting to be more vigilant now to see if any other unusual behaviour happening.

I may run the windows repair tomorrow when I get time.

Dave

Your diagnosis of a mouse problem could certainly be on the right track, as you have also experienced the same problem on some other programs.
If your mouse is a wireless one it could be caused by a low battery. If you have another mouse you could try that. Mice are like all devices in that they can get faults. I suppose one of the most used parts of a computer is the mouse, so they generally last fairly well.
