Outlook and Mobile Device Manager Compatibility?

I have a new PC which is a 64bit system and is running Windows 7. I have installed Mobile Device Manager to connect to my phone. The connection to my phone has been successful, but it won't update Microsoft outlook. It tells me to make 'outlook your default email'.

I have Microsoft Outlook 2000 (because that is what I had previously!) and each time I open it, it asks me if I want to make it the default email manager, and I click 'yes' - then it asks again and click 'yes'. But it clearly fails.

I've tried going into 'Default Programmes' but Outlook is not even listed. I've tried 'repairing' Outlook and that hasn't worked. Any ideas please?
