outlook express?

my bro has the 03 version of outlook, he unfortunately never backed up the pst files. His desktop crashed (it ran xp), so bought a laptop w/ w7. he has a USB to SATA adapter, but he cannot do a proper search of his old hard drive to find these files. is there any way in w7 that i can search this specific drive for the files?, i have tried to use w7's search feature but it has found nothing. I know the files are their. he is logged as administrator but whenever he tries to access the files it says he cannot. because he is not the admin.

I'm not using Outlook 2003 so I can't say the exact location, but you should be able to use Windows Explorer with the old drive connected via USB, navigate to it's "c:" drive and in the search box in the upper right corner of Windows Explorer type "*.pst" (w/o quotes). That should list all files with the pst extension; but I'd only expect to see one.

I'm confused by the title of your post "Outlook Express?", since that program from XP doesn't use a pst file; instead it uses a series of *.dbx files. BTW, Windows 7 doesn't come with an email program so you need to download and install one that can import from whatever the old format was (one pst from Outlook or multiple dbas from OE).

I'm not sitting in front of an XP machine, but have him look in:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft

where (username) is his user name on the old HD.

(Things may be different if he's using Outlook Express rather than Outlook 2003. As you mention .pst files, though, I assume it's the latter.)

He may also need to take ownership of the files to do much with them.
