Outlook needs approval to start then wont keep reading pane on bottom

Hello all, I have two MSO2003 problems..

Problem 1:

Win7 HP.. when I start Outlook 03, a popup asks

Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer:

File: Outlook.exe
Publisher: MS
File origin: hard drive on this computer

This has been happening for a while.. I dont remember when it started, but it seems it began when the reading pane thing below started..

Problem 2:

The reading pane will -not- stay on the bottom of the sceen when Outlook starts up.. I change it time and again from side pane to bottom pane and it just doesnt stay bottom when Outlook is restarted..

Any ideas? No viruses, or malware/spyware on the machine.. MSE updates/runs full scan every night.

A possible 'quick' walkaround for Problem 2...

I wonder if you could create a new short-cut to Outlook once you have the reading pane located at the bottom?
Unfortunately, I no longer have access to Office 2003, so I am unable to test the idea.

Irene, unfortunately, no.. it isnt just a shortcut that put the reading pane on the right side as opposed to wanting it on the bottom.. it's even when I select it from All Programs, MS Office 2003 folder menu also.. so it isnt a shortcut called fault...

As for the UAC, that also isnt the problem (well, it is, but changing UAC level isnt it..) as it never before brought it up, and no other program brings up the "Program wants to make changes, yadda yadda.." so its isnt a UAC setting, unless I turn it completely off, which I dont want to.. Is there a way to set permission for individual programs? I already have All Users: Full Read/Write permissions set.. Isnt there a xxxx.prefs file or xxx.db-something file I can kill to make MSO rebuild the default views?

I'm thinking it's getting to that time of year to rebuild anyway.. uninstall/re-install MSOffice2003.. I'm not about to buy MSO'07 or '10, so I think just killing this install off (after backup, of course) and reinstalling MSO'03 hoping that will reset to defaults, bottom pane, no UAC notices..

Before reinstall you could try detect and repair:
How to install or repair and reinstall Office 2003 programs and features

The following two methods describe two ways that you can use the Detect and Repair tool to detect and repair problems with installed programs.


Method 1: Run Detect and Repair on the Help Menu

1. On the Help menu in any Office program, click Detect and Repair.
2. Click Start.

Note To restore program shortcuts to the Start menu, verify that the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box is selected.


Method 2: Run the Detect and Repair Tool from Add or Remove Programs

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
3. In the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair, and then click Next.
4. Click either Reinstall Office or Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Install.

Note If you choose to detect and repair problems in your Microsoft Office installation, click to select the Restore my Start Menu Shortcuts check box to rebuild your Microsoft Office shortcuts

ok, ran the Detect and Repair, but it killed the default profiles and wouldnt let me get back into my folders.. wouldnt even start, so I did a re-install.. actually, Repair from the Install memnu, and it fixed everything.. reading pane is on the bottom, but it still gives me the UAC notice at start-up.. any way to set permissions for individual programs to fix the UAC thing?


Fixed it.. found this in the General Discussion sub forum: Went into Outlook 2003 shortcut properties, unchecked the Run As Administrator box, opens now as normal, no UAC prompt, even with default UAC level.. woohoo!!
