Hello, 7F.
I would like to overclock my Acer Extensa 5235 for it to perform better.
I know you are not supposed to overclock laptops but I want to try it out.
What would I have to do? Do I need 3rd party software?

Thanks,
Ryan7z.

Not worth it. The performance benefit will be very low, and you run the risk of melting your components.

If you REALLY want to do it, you overclock through the BIOS, assuming that Acer didn't lock it.

It's highly unlikely that the BIOS will be unlocked and provide you with any mechanisms to overclock it. I would not do it with a laptop, even if I could..since you cannot really add additional heat sinks, cooling fans, etc. Just not worth the risk.

If you want to improve the performance replace the 2.5" hard drive with an SSD. That will be your best performance increase.

+1, and add some ram too!

ram is cheap.

Thanks guys, I'll just add parts then I guess.
Do you think I could change the processor to something better?
Maybe just try and revamp the whole thing?

Laptops aren't meant for upgrading or overclocking, get a desktop for that.

You might set your laptop on fire if you try.

depending on the model you my be able to upgrade the CPU
i did on mine from a 2.2gb to a 3.06gb OC`ed to 3.6gb with no ill effects so far and its been a year since i did it.
the guy that said laptops aren't meant to be upgraded is misinformed
these days you can upgrade cpu/ram/hdd/dvd drive to blu-ray/even graphics cards on some

They aren't meant to be, but they can. Generally it either isn't possible, or not worth it.

not ment to be overclocked i agree with
but i disagree with not ment to be upgraded
i have had laptops since 2000 and all have been able to be upgraded in the cpu/ram and hdd departments and in the last few years you can even upgrade the GPU on a growing number of laptops

If you end up going with an entirely different laptop, hit up the gaming laptops. I know that the ASUS G series allow for some overclocking. But with an acer, I don't think so. I tried looking to see if my old gateway laptop could handle some overclocking, but the bloody PLL wouldn't allow any attempts. But if you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, want to see if you can overclock, there's some research on Google that could help and/or if you have the guts, crack open your laptop and scout down the PLL chip and see if the number on it can allow overclocking. As I said though, I highly doubt it. A SDD and RAM is your best bet.

As for your processor, I believe the freeware of SiSoft Sandra will let you see if a processor with a higher frequency can be plopped in. But an Intel Celeron upgrade might not be fully worth it though.
