Getting this one a lot. Never have before. Started a couple weeks ago but would only happen infrequently. Now I can't have my computer on for more than a few minutes. I have made no known driver or hardware changes in that time period. I recently (a month ago) installed a new graphics card (MSI Radeon 260x), and all recommended drivers and soft(bloat)ware that came with the mfg disk.

Although it will crash seemingly at random, I can with near certain reliability cause it to crash by attempting to run Max Payne 3. 80% of the time it will immediately crash. If it opens, it doesn't crash during play. Strange. It didn't do this (as much) a week ago.

Searching around the net, I have tried the following:

*Tried RAM sticks separately, individually
*Changed out RAM for confirmed working RAM
*Changed RAM slots in motherboard

Not a RAM problem.

*Put in spare graphics card

Not a GFX problem.

*Ran chkdsk
---* /f /r

Not a HDD problem.

Must be software related. I think it's related to the new graphics card (MSI Radeon 260x), since I -never- had this problem before installing it, although I did not immediately have this problem either, and it has -increased in frequency- over the past few days to where I can't even have my computer on for more than a few minutes without it crashing. Likely a graphics driver problem, but I'm having trouble ensuring all old drivers are eliminated, and installing different ones, since I'm not sure which would be likely to work, and the computer crashes too frequently to reliably install something.

It also increased in frequency upon installing Max Payne 3 a week ago. I don't think this has much to do with it. Coincidental, or just symptomatic.

I will post bug report as requested in the sticky once I can get it to complete successfully on my main computer.

Install Service pack 1 and all other windows updates. Otherwise the system will remain vulnerable to threats including BSODs.

Also Test your RAM modules for possible errors. Run memtest86+ for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Let us know the result.

Yes. I noted this and other attempted solutions in the op.

The problem seems to have been fixed somehow. I don't know why. But I have not had a bsod for a couple of hours, including the time it took to install SP1.

Only thing now is, Max Payne 3 will crash instead of windows crashing. So, whatever changed (other than SP upgrade (it was seemingly fixed before this)), it made Max Payne 3 crash 80% of the time (during initial loading; if you get past that, it doesn't crash), instead of crashing Windows randomly.

Really strange.

Not marking this as fixed just yet.

Make sure you update Windows all the way - there are more than 180 updates after SP1 is installed.

The easiest way to keep your machine up-to-date is to install Windows Updates (WU) automatically
Launch WU and select change settings to: Install updates automatically (recommended)
Tick the other settings as shown below and you should be in much better shape.

my screen might not exactly match yours, but the same options should be selected
If you get another BSOD after Windows is completely up-to-date, please post the BSOD information for that occurrence.

Thanks
