I've just upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Professional 32Bit and I'm pleased to say the following all installed and are running with no problems at all:

• Adobe Photoshop CS2 (I actually installed Photoshop 6 first ! which worked, and then I upgraded to CS2)
• ZoneAlarm Internet Security v. 91_008_000
• Canon Printer Driver V2.00 for Vista (my iP5200 printer works fine)
• MS Office 2007 (obviously works fine !)
• Palm Desktop and Hotsync Manager v6.2 (Hotsync with my Palm phone worked fine via Bluetooth connection).

I've not actually had any problems yet (touch wood) - so will post more successes when I get to install my other beloved applications.

I'm particularly pleased that Photoshop works, as it cost me lots, and I use it all the time. Same with my Palm software (I'm a die-hard Palm user !!). I was told these wouldn't work with Vista, hence I stuck with XP for so long. So perhaps MS have got it right now ? :sarc:

I actually purchased 7 Pro as I assumed I'd need the XP emulator for software compatibility - but I've got no idea whether this is being used or not. All the above software apps are running with a Win 7 look, i.e. transparent window borders, curvy buttons etc..so I think they're actually just running fine on plain 7. Sorry, no screenshots yet.

Welcome Sharivari.
It's not an emulator - simply a way to actually run XP in a virtual space inside of Windows 7. I'm sure I'll be corrected, but I see its value as mainly for businesses that need to run proprietary software - and won't go down the upgrade path unless they can be sure to have this functionality.

Compatibilty mode (right click your troublesome program's exe) will fix most issues if you are having trouble getting full functionality out of a program.

Both this topic and the "great free programs" topic will alert you of the need to run some programs in compatibility mode.

The whole CS4 suite runs great for me tho some ppl have had some issues.

I expected that I'd need to use such a 'compatibility mode' but still surprised not have required it. So far, everything is just installing fine as if I was running XP ! I'll post these up once I'm happy they're all running OK, but so far so good (Roxio Media Creator 8, Dreamweaver MX 2004 etc..)

It was paid when it was available.. but there are plenty of Dinosaurs (myself included) that will continue using it for their Email until it is pried from their dead cold harddrives....

Malware bytes 1.36. I do not have this "running", I have SAS running and I only use Malware Bytes as a secondary scan program.

Epson 4870 scanner. I tried the Vista x64 driver to see if it would work and it does.

Brother HL 2070N B/W laser printer. W7 found a driver and it works great.

If there are any train simmers out there MSTS and Rail Simulator work.

One think I hate about W7 is the taskbar, its always in the way somehow.
Why will MS not make it just like vista etc and let other programs go on top of it.

I hope this list is of some use.

Are you sure that rail simulator will work on windows 7 professional 64-bit, whether its running XP mode or not?

Guys, Kaspersky 8(2009) won't work properly on Win 7 RTM. People will have to upgrade to Version 9(2010) if they want to get Kaspersky working. I'm referring to both KAV and KIS. If your licenses for 2009 are still valid, you are eligible for an upgrade from 8 => 9.

If all you are looking to do with this software is create a backup image of your system drive and some day restore from the image, in my opinion you don't need to spend any money on payware imaging software.

The included Windows System Image utility is adequate but even better is another free tool called Macrium Reflect, found here:

I have used both of these free utilities to not only create an image but also to restore it and both worked much better and with less hassle than Acronis TI.

As well as regular backups I'd also like to clone the hard drive occasionally, whether as a spare bootable drive or to migrate to a bigger disk. I've always used Acronis in the past and would like to stick with it if possible, but so many folks seem to be reporting problems with ATI2010.
