Paragon GoVirtual/VMware Player and DELL pre-install XP problem

I had no problem creating the virtual machines as described in Paragon's instructions. The Win7 wouldn't load in my DELL XP but I just put it down to lack of patience on my part. However, VMware Player won't let me log on with my XP virtual. The XP virtual machine was created from my work machine which has a pre-installed DELL XP. VMware player keeps trying to activate my XP. How to I get round this? It is a truly "legal" and "pre-installed" version of XP. I even went out and bought a 640gb portable USB HDD to run these two between home and work. Is there a better way of going mobile then what Paragon is suggesting?

Can you give more details on the problem? Would be nice to see your host configuration on Windows 7. Please take screen shot of Windows Disk Management and post it here.
Also What exact error did you get when trying to boot Windows 7 on virtual machine?
As for XP, this is normal that XP asks for activation. This is standard protection of Microsoft against piracy cloning.
BTW, there should be Log Saver tool in this Go Virtual, did you notice it? If yes then use it to collect the logs and upload them here.

Is it even possible to run XP from an external HDD?

Yes, it is possible to put the virtual drive to External USB drive and then point Virtual Machine to that drive.
He is not trying to install and run Windows from External Drive. Just locating there his vmdk file (virtual disk).

Thank you Noxcho. I have solved the problem. I forgot to say that both systems are running Japanese OS, not that that made much difference in the end. Well I went over to the My Digital Life forum and tried their VMware Workstation (Multi-Brand) Bios Installer (lite). Worked like a charm and I can recommend it to anybody else who is having the same problem with an OEM. I also managed to get Windows7 loaded under XP and connected to the NET, something which I couldnt get with XP under Windows7 at home for some reason. But I am not beefing.


If you still want those details then I will oblique.
