Solved partition c drive

hi,

want to reduce the size on my c drive (193gb) ... win 7 ultimate is already installed on this drive ... how can i do it & how much should i keepit for only windows 7 os ??? & should other programs (adobe,office) be installed on other partition ??? ... thanx

Partition Wizard is the best program to manipulate partitions.

Keep C at at least 100 to 125 GB.

Install your programs on C.

Post a shot of Disk Management first please.

No, you wouldn't normally want to put programs on another partition. Keep Windows and programs on the same partition.

Depending on how many programs you have installed, you might want to make C as little as 60. Most people can get along fine with 80 or 100 if they don't have an unusual situation or a bunch of games installed.

Windows alone takes up about 20 when first installed and grows a bit after that.

You may be able to shrink with Windows Disk Management or you may need a separate tool.

Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management so we can see what's going on.

How large is your C:\Windows directory?

How about C:\program files or C:\program files (x86)?

Have you done any disk cleanup with Windows built in tool or CCleaner?

thanx for fast reply ... & sorry forgot to mention ... i do have d & e partition drives with data on it & if i do via any of these programms, will i risk that data in drives too ???

If D and E are drives then no, if E and D are Partitions on the same drive as C, then you`d better be careful what you do.

This is why we asked you for a shot of Disk Management before you go any further. Please cooperate if you want help.

cant post a screenshot as Win 7 not booting with my username ... stops at win logo & goes back to bios ... its in loop ... bt my c drive is 193 gb, d = 300 gb e = 1.5tb ... have 2tb hdd ...

So why in the world do you want to mess with partitions, get windows booting first, then worry about partitions.

had performed chkdsk /f /r ... it corrected some files in bad sector ... as drive was 193 gb it took 4 hrs ... so was thinking of reducing it so next time scandisk is done pretty fast in time ...

What anti-virus are you using?

You say C is 193 occupied.

What was it a week ago? A month ago? A year ago?

just 29 gb is used from c drive (195 gb) ... programms getting slow with "not responding" (for sum mins) ...

my machine is ... i3 processor with 4gb RAM ... seagate 2tb hdd ... Win 7 ultimate ... Avast antivirus ...

have partition my drive as (c = 195gb, d = 450 gb, e = 1.18 tb) ...

if i want to freshly do everything again ie partition drives ... how much & many should i keep it (partition sizes) ???

If you have a single 2 TB drive, I'd probably give 100 to 200 GB to C for Windows and applications and the entire remainder to D for all of your data.

The exceptions might be:

1: if you have an unusually large number of applications or games that you want to put on C, in which case you'd make C larger to accommodate them.

2: if you have very little data and don't anticipate having much more. If all you need for your data is say 200 GB, there's not much point in allowing 1.8 TB for data. But in such a case there's not much point in having a 2 TB drive in the first place.

So, I'm guessing you are like most people---your data requires more space than Windows and your applications.

I'm not sure why you have both D and E now. Why is that?

yeah, i do have lotta data (comics, movies,songs,work-files etc) ... was gonna make this 2tb drive for backup only ... bt my old drive (4yrs old) just got corrupted (no spinining) suddenly ...

Again: why do you have both D and E now?

Typically, there's no reason to do that, but you might have an unusual situation?? The most efficient way to store data is to simply use a folder structure on a single partition, barring an over-riding exception to the rule.
