partition hd

I just recently built my first pc. I have 2 hd in it, one is 1 tb and the 500 g. The os is on the 1 tb that I just recently tried partitioning. I was able to create 3 partitions but the one the OS is on os around 500 g, I'm not home right now to get the exact size. the partitioner in 7 won't let me make the OS partition any smaller. What aftermarket partitioner would you guys recomnmend? Since it is 7 i didn't wnt to just jump in with gpart or magic.

Can you post a screen cap of what you see in Disk Management?

Do you get an error message when you attempt to resize?

Don't use a third party app unless you have no choice.

I will be away from my home computer for a couple days, but will post screen cap then. I don't get a error, it jujst won't let me resize the partition.

Try disabling hibernation, and disabling paging files, and then defrag, and try again

So is GParted, but before we delve into any third-party tools, let's see if we can do it from Windows. Otherwise, we could cause some damage, possibly ending in data loss.

I would also recommend partition wizard but as this is a system partition I would suggest that you download and use their boot disk version of the software.

It is always better to work on any operating system partition from outside the OS

If it refuses to shrink, then use Auslogics Disk Defrag to see a map. THere may be a system file way out in right field blocking shrinkage.

The solution to this is using Perfect Disk trial version Offline Defragger to defrag/move System files. Works great.
