My h partition is constantly changing to f no matter how many times i change it back. This has happened when I had this partition on a internal drive and now it does the same on the external. I thought maybe changing to a new drive would help but nope. Is windows 7 finnicky or is it a controller issue? I feel like giving up and leaving it like that....grrr

Nope, It happens when I am using my system heavily, multitasking. I have tried this tip and also changing it with reg-edit. It still will change and it is always the same two partitions.

Have you ever used "F" for a different device such as a USB Flash drive?
If not, can you plug in a USB flash drive and assign it the letter "F"?

Maybe doing this will stop it from changing from "H" to "F" for the HD.
Just a wild guess here for something to try...

My F partition is for my games, movies and music so i couldn't do that, I just need to figure out what is causing it to jump back and forth. I have heard windows is weird like this. I know it is not a sata port problem because this drive is connected by usb.

Try to use a high letter in the alphabet for that partition - like S,T or W.

I was under the impression "H" is what you always want the drive to use, and "F" is an unused drive letter.
If both "H" and "F" are used, my idea won't work...

I thought if the drive uses letter "H" and you set something else to use drive letter "F", Windows might not change the the drive letter...
Sorry for the confusion.

I will try other letters that are higher, and no problem David. I need to find out if other people have run across this problem.
