Partitions After Win 7 Install

After a recent upgrade to windows 7, I found a new 11.2 GB partition on my hard drive, this partition had 10.6 GB of free space, after searching I found that the files contained in this partition were not necessary and so rather than have 11.2 GB of unusable space I attempted to delete the files and expand C into the free space, Windows disc manager was unable to do this as the option to expand C was not available. So using partition wizard I tried again (unfortunately without backing up first) The result was the lose of the OS and all data.
However this was no real problem as there was not a lot of stuff on there that was needed. So after yet another clean install of windows 7, I now have 11.2 GB of unallocated space on the hard drive which I would very much like to add to available space in C.

As you may be able to tell from my post I'm new to partitions and so please keep any help as simple as possible.
PS the hard disc size should be 320 GB, Partition C is 286 GB, there is 11.2 GB of unallocated free space so what has happened to the remaining 23 GB

Please post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using paper clip in Reply Box.

If the unallocated space is to the right of C: then you should be able to extend the partition in Disk Mgmt.

If it is to the left of C: then you need to use Partition Wizard bootable CD to Resize. This is the first time I have heard it failed during a Resizing operation. Next time post here as we can help you recover from this.

You'll want to use free Partition Wizard bootable CD. Boot CD, let files load, select 1 for screen res, rightclick C:, select Resize, drag left grey border all the way over unallocated space to the left, OK, apply all steps, allow restart to complete resize.

If Win7 doesn't start after resizing finishes, boot your Win7 DVD, select Repair on second screen, click through to Recover Tools, select Startup Repair and run up to 3 separate times to repair or rewrite MBR.

Since resizing operations can fail, be sure to back up your files.

Hi Thanks for the help, I know have 1 single partition of 298 GB.
Can you explain if the hd is GB why there is only 298 recognised.

Disk sizes are quoted in bytes * 10^9 (sounds bigger and is better for marketing)

320 of these units = 320 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 298 "real" GB

286 + 11 is almost 298.

Also, I believe partition table always takes some disk space.
