Password problem

An 'IT' guy did some work at the house. Before he started, my laptop and my wife's desktop were happily in a homegroup. IT guy introduced a newly configured additional laptop for my wife. In the process, he did not use the homegroup but another form of networking between my wife's existing desktop and new laptop and consequently blew off my wife's homegroup participation. Although previously I've never had a password between my laptop and her desktop other than possibly during the initial setup, he was insistent on the need for same between her desktop and laptop.

The result--when attempting to connect via file explorer from her desktop to the laptop and prompted for a password, whether I enter her desktop or laptop password the connection is disallowed. Needless to say the 'IT' guy is useless.

Is there a way to nuke whatever connection exists between the two machines and start over so as to gain access between my wife's desktop and laptop?

Btw, even though my laptop appears to be the only machine still in the homegroup, I can still view files on either of her machines.

What version of Windows is her new computer?


For windows 7 here is what to do on her new one:

1. Open HomeGroup by clicking the Start button, type Homegroup in the search box, and then clicking HomeGroup.
2. Click Join now, and then complete the wizard.

Note

• If you don't see the Join now button, there might not be a homegroup available. Make sure that someone has created a homegroup first. Or you can choose to create a homegroup yourself.

Her laptop is Win8, my laptop and her desktop are Win7

Just to be clear--

Since the 'password' is required going from her desktop to her laptop AND since her desktop is not part of a homegroup (my laptop is the only of the 3 that is) I don't see how having her laptop join a homegroup will solve the password problem going from her desktop to her laptop? Plus, that would still leave her desktop out of a homegroup and it still leaves whatever 'other' type of networking the guy setup in place with her desktop.

FWIW, I tried having her desktop join the homegroup for which my laptop is the other remaining member (as a start a week ago), I typed in the password generated by my laptop on her desktop and her desktop sort of went out to lunch trying to figure out what to do...
