Password protected web page

Hi all. I have just joined this forum and look forward to being a part of it. I maintain a website for my band. On that website I have a webpage and files that are located in a folder on the website that is password protected.

Prior to installing Windows 7 on my machine, when I tried to access the password protected web page I would be prompted for a userid and password. I would provide those and would gain access to the web page. Once there, I could click any of the links on the web page (links to other files in the same password protected folder) and I would not be asked to provide user/pw again each time.

Since installing windows 7 I not only have to provide user/pw to gain initial access to the web page but I am prompted again for user/pw for every file/link I try to access once on the web page.

It is very annoying. It is appropriate to be prompted the first time but not every time you click a link that points to something in the same folder on the web site.

Anybody have any ideas. I hope I've explained the problem clearly. I am running Internet Explorer 8 at version 8.0.7600.16385

OK, I've got some more info on this. The difference seems to be which player is the default for the files I am trying to access on the protected web page. The links happen to be to .MP3 files. If the default .MP3 player in the browser is Windows Media Player, it prompts me for userid/pw every time I click a link to a file. If the default is QuickTime for playing .MP3 files in Internet Explorer, I do not get prompted for a userid/pw.

However, with Windows Media Player, the file begins playing immediately after I enter the userid/pw (i.e. streaming). With QuickTime it seems it has to download the entire file before it starts playing.

So I guess I am asking if anyone knows how to adjust the Windows Media Player/Internet Explorer options so I don't get prompted for every link OR does anyone know how to tell QuickTime to stream the files instead of downloading the whole file before starting to play?

Welcome to the forum! My only guess would be because the files are not "owned" by you, therefore it requires permission to use them. Alot of folks have trouble with file permissions that were created in XP and now they have moved them to W7. As far as WMP vs. Quicktime, I can only guess it is a matter of WMP being a Windows player it checks for permission to play the file, whereas Quicktime could care less. How to fix it I am at a loss, sorry. These were just guesses as to why you are having an issue.

Open Quicktime/Edit/Preferences/Quicktime/Streaming/Enable Instant On
