Solved Paypal security certificate error

Hi Mr Bear. Thank-you, I ran both of them and there was nothing toxic found.
There is now no doubt in my mind that I have what appears to be a phishing bug; somehow it is substituting parts of the actual PayPal page with a phony site. I have notified PayPal but I am going to log an official warning of its existence. I am also going to talk to Kaspersky because it has got past KIS 13 and continues to elude it, despite having all settings at maximum security. In the meantime I will not be effecting any financial transactions online. Anybody out there watching have any suggestions they will be most gratefully received.

Considering the possible consequences of this "man-in-the-middle" type malware, I wonder if its time to perfomr the best possible fix.....a format and clean install?

A format and clean install is about as possible as a brain transplant. I have so much stuff on this computer (despite being only 12 months old), much of which is irreplaceable applications acquired via the good offices of my techie, that it is inconceivable. No, I'd acquire another machine purely for online activity and turn off the LAN to this one before I'd consider a back to start option. I take your point, but definitely not! There will be a solution along in the not too distant future - I am sure; until then all critical browsing will be done on my tablet. I am waiting to hear more from PayPal and Kaspersky; watch this space, because it could be you next!

It's Kaspersky. My techie removed KIS 13 and put in MSE and all is hunky dory. He told me there are numerous entries all over the web about this problem, so what PayPal told me about them getting no complaints is BS; now there's a surprise!

If it helps I use.
1. Microsoft Security Essentials.
2. Malwarebytes Anti Malware Professional
3. Windows 7 built in Firewall.
They all play well together so far.

I've heard you folks extolling the simple virtues of MSE and asked my techie if I should scrap KIS and his response was unequivocal. I should have listened to you Guys at the start. Thanks for all your help.

Many web sites will tell you with charts and graphs which anti virus is best. To me it doesn't really matter if they don't do well with all the other things you do with your computer. As you well know now. I use Microsoft Security Essentials because it works for me and so far keep me protected. If I had to pay for it I would. I do not need the problems you and many others have went through.
I did have a couple of problems with Malwarebytes Anti Malware but they admitted the problem and fixed the problem very quickly. Because of the way the problem was handled is why I stick with them.

Just for reference purposes: KIS 13 are using a 'sandbox' approach that has either been quietly upgraded/changed in the background or else it is a conflict with IE 10 to which I have recently upgraded; probably the latter, but once the problem was fixed we didn't bother trying to discover exactly why it happened.

Just for the record I started having this same "weird problem" I noticed the user never mentioned whether he was getting the same problem in other browsers. Odd from a troubleshooting point of view? Anyhow, I did have the same problem in all 3 browsers. IE, Firefox and Chrome... I couldn't log into PayPal, same problem with certificate, kept telling certificate was good for nanacast.com? and would take me to that site instead! I tried other systems on the network, no problem so I knew it was specific to my computer. Dumped all the temp folders and apps (cc cleaner) and rebooted... still same problem...

Eventually I tried flushing the DNS? on a tip from a forum chat... about downloading some huge program... but essentially the pics were showing that it was doing an ipconfig/release and then /renew... lo and behold... so I tried that manually myself by going into command prompt myself.... and lo and behold.... it worked!

This "issue" has popped up more then once though, i.e. (twice so far...) thing I am trying to figure is what is causing it?... is a database corrupting? bad hd? (not likely) I feel it is software related... I use Alvira Personal (free version) because normally I find it compatible and (free of course) But you have made me consider it as a possibility, as it is constantly updating...

For what it's worth... for now I just go to Command prompt and ipconfig... /release then /renew
