PC freeze, black screen and sound skipping at random

Hello,

A few days ago I had this problem for the first time, my PC freezes (no buttons respond) and I get a black screen. If sound was playing at that moment, it skips continuously. The only thing I can do is powering off my pc and restart it again.

After restarting it says the pc didn't shut down cleanly and starts collecting meta-cache, I have the option to start Windows in safe or normal mode.

After that everything seems unchanged/normal until it freezes again (this is at random, it can be 20 minutes after / 1 hour after /...).

Prior to the first time I did not download/install anything (to my knowledge), nor did something happen to my pc (didn't let it drop, didn't spill anything on it, etc).

I followed the instructions on the "BSOD - Posting Instructions" to make this post.

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Thank you.

Thomas D.M.

There are no dump files in your .zip folder. Can you please follow these instructions on how to configure dump files. Can you also disable automatic restart, just follow the tutorial and you will see a tick box saying "Automatically Restart" untick it.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html

Can you then enable Driver Verifier by following these instructions as it will help determine if there are bad drivers installed.

Ok, I did as Thedoctor44 said: I configured dump files to be created in Kernel memory dump form, disabled "Automatically Restart" and enabled the Driver Verifier as instructed by the thread.

Do I now wait until my pc freezes again and repeat the BSOD procedure?

Thanks for helping me anyway.

After I restarted the pc I couldn't start Windows normally and I got a blue screen saying "The IO Manager has detected a violation by a driver that is being identified." Technical information: 0x000000c9. After restarting again I had to choose between Startup Repair (recommended) or Start Up Windows Normally. When I choose the first option it says "Can not start Windows. This can be caused by recent hardware or software changes." Status: 0xc000000f. If I choose to start up normally I get the blue screen again. So basically I can't enter Windows anymore.

I really hope you have a good explanation for this, I'm typing this from my mother's laptop.

Right, boot into Safe Mode. The go onto the Start menu and type "Verfier.exe" Then choose delete existing settings. It should work then.

Then boot normally and it should work.

Ok, I managed to get into my Windows again in normal mode. First thing I noticed is that it runs noticably slower than normal. What do I do now?

Well first thing is first, did Driver Verifier collect the crash dumps? They should be located in the minidump folder? the original problem hasn't been fixed.

hmm, I've never encountered this before. The folder is located:
C:/Windows/Minidump

You can boot into Safe Mode with Networking. It is driver related because driver verifier picked up a violation.

How do I show you the file? It's a .dmp file and I can't upload it here

There we go, some useful information. Right, the Sonic CD/DVD driver is causing some problems.

Code:
Unable to load image \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\[COLOR="red"]PxHlpa64.sys[/COLOR], Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for [COLOR="red"]PxHlpa64.sys[/COLOR]
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for [COLOR="Red"]PxHlpa64.sys[/COLOR]
We'll leave it be at the time being as I can't find a website to update the drivers for it.

Code:
fffff880`015cc000 fffff880`015d81a0 PxHlpa64 T (no symbols)
    Loaded symbol image file: PxHlpa64.sys
    Image path: \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\PxHlpa64.sys
    Image name: PxHlpa64.sys
    Timestamp: [COLOR="red"]Mon Oct 17 15:29:34 2011[/COLOR] (4E9C3BCE)
    CheckSum: 0001C018
    ImageSize: 0000C1A0
    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

The main culprit is Daemon Tools, I've heard of this program causing lots of BSOD issues. Please remove the program altogether.

Code:
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for dtsoftbus01.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for dtsoftbus01.sys
Probably caused by : [COLOR="red"]dtsoftbus01.sys[/COLOR] ( dtsoftbus01+1324 )

Right, leave the Sonic CD/DVD driver for now. Remove Daemon tools first then we'll see if the issue continues. One thing at a time.

EDIT: Do you use the Sonic software? I believe it's a disc burning program. It's called Roxio Burn.

Ok, I uninstalled Daemon Tools and no, I do not burn any discs so I do not not use the Sonic CD/DVD driver (if that is its only function).

Is Sonic/Roxio Burn installed on your PC?
EDIT: After removing Daemon Tools restart your PC and do what you normally do.

Those programs don't show up in Control Panel but when typed in the Search Bar several files/folders named Roxio Burn / Roxio Log Files / Secure Burn, ... and SONIC_SETUP.LOG pop up.
