I have been recieving the ATI display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered error.

Took the PC into the guys I bought it from and they recommended a format, formatted a partition on my pc with a fresh install of windows 7, installed latest catalyst drivers but no dice, ramped my fan speed up to 100% to troubleshoot and it definitely helped, stopped getting the error but pc starts seriously lagging after a while (playing spore & Black and White 2) playability also increases if I down the res from 1920 x 1080. This seems to indicate overheating n my opinion but I haven't seen the card go above 57 degrees. My chassis has no fans but with everything at stock should it overheat :/ especially on old games.

Been browsing forums for ages and seen everything from people blaming windows updates to ram issues.

I have run Prime95 and Furmark all came out fine, no glitches. Max temp on Furmark was 84 degrees.

Any ideas?

You said reducing res helps. That indicates a GPU bottleneck. On what are you basing your performance comparison?

Don't need a comparison my Rig should run Spore and Black and White 2, both are low spec games, unless one of my components is faulty even a bottleneck shouldn't effect performance on such graphically low end titles.

B&W 2 for example would run on a single core celeron, 8500gt combination.

Also furMark FPS when run at 1920 x 1080 ranged between 60 - 120 without a glitch.

Sounds like you're having trouble transferring game texture content from disk to RAM to VRAM.

1) defrag hdd
2) press f8 while booting and run memory test
3) reset BIOS setting to performance default -OR- look for problem settings if you know what you're doing...

This is a laptop you'd be surpised how much lint and dust they pickup when used on your lap. It defenitely sounds heat related yet your saying it never goes over 57c, if this is the case I would suspect a failing piece of hardware. How old is the system?

You stated ramping the fan up to 100% helped so that also tends to lead to heat as a problem.
I would seriously blow out the intake and exhaust ports with cannned air. see what comes out, if you ge t a bit I might even consider having it taken apart and cleaned. I've seen the inside of one of these completely covered in lint.
Otherwise you may be looking at a piece of hardware that has already been heat damaged and when it runs for a while at 57c it just starts slowing down, due to heat.

What program are you using to watch the temps with?

I think your correct to think that it should not be having any problems running those games. You might want to run Prime 95 for a whiile and stress the system and see if it starts showing errors after a while. Prime95 (64bit) - 25.11 Download - EXTREME Overclocking
And watch the temps as it runs.
Fabe

Thanks for all the advice,

Thefabe all items are practically brand new- PC = 3 months, GPU & PSU = less than a month.

So no dust or cleaning required.

PS its a desktop PC
Using MSI overdrive to monitor Temps

This becomes more and more confusing, updated Motherboards Bios last night, PC runs better in general, no more lag during gameplay, and then Suddenly BAM game freeze with vertical lines, had to exit via task manager.

Really sounds like a bad video card...

New update, lowered clocks right down to 1000/700. Now dead stable. This pretty much means faulty card..... I think

I concur. Is it still under warranty? What was the make and model for future reference?
