I had worked with large CAD/CAE-based workstations for years. Then, around '85, the boss decides to put something called a pc on my desk to help with mundane engineering tasks (reports, schedules, memos etc.) looked like this ...
I thought 'this is cool'. Then someone loaded 'After Dark', and I thought 'super cool'. Am I dating myself yet? Finally I discovered I could assign sounds to tasks that would bring this little machine to life. When I turned it on it would greet me with HAL's "I am completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly." When I deleted a file, "This chick is TOAST!", when I turn off the machine "I'll be bahk", you get the picture.
Can we do this in this day & age?
(btw, many years later when I was exposed to Windows I immediately thought 'rip off!'.
