About amonth ago I was installing updates and suddenly my pc rebooted, and I was shown the GRUB boot loader, which I don't recall ever using, i tried logging into windows using the bootloader but it didn't work, so i resulted to the fixmbr and that did the trick, a few days ago, I needed to check on my properties of my PC and noticed that my windows was no longer activated. I have run sfc and that gave me the windows protection message, I also ran chkdsk. I also looked at buying a new key since I'm running ultimate and considering downgrading to pro, if I can't get this fixed, which I rather not spend the cash if I need to, can anyone help me out. In the last year I replace the hard drives, cloned the system, switched to AHCI while still activated, and activated the on board firewire, the last install before I checked the activation was was protools which installed a fair bit of hardware drivers.

Thanks for adding the code box. It does make it easier to read.

One more thing if you could. It would be handy if you filled in your system specs.

Here is another Brink tutorial that will help.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

It appears like you have a OEM/SLP key installed on a after market retail motherboard. That will not work.

My system specs have been added, why, i run this for 4 years straight, adding 2 hard drives in 2012, replace video card in 2010.

You have a Asus retail motherboard. (Motherboard ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D PRO) with a Asus Bios with a COA key that is for a OEM/SLP factory install of Windows 7.

That makes it a counterfeit installation.
Why it took so long to show up; I have no idea.
OEM/SLP keys come preinstalled on a factory made computer and can not be used on any other computer legally.

Your installation came originally from ACER/Gateway.

You will need to install with a legal COA key.

What is the Windows Certificate of Authenticity?

Newegg, Amazon or like me. I buy my Windows 7 from a local retailer.
They are made by Microsoft. Come in a nice sealed plastic box with the DVD and COA sticker.

The GRUB loader is probably the result of having had an Activation exploit installed - this acts as an interface between Windows and the motherboard, and tricks Windows into thinking the machine is properly licensed.

There are number of things which can break the Exploit - the most likely being installing SP1, or running certain commands (such as CHKDSK or SFC) to restore system files to their proper places.

The real question is where the original install came from - and can you persuade the vendor to refund the purchase price?
