Howdy

I'm not sure what category my PC problems fall under. Firstly It doesn't boot up correctly sometimes. It boots up into a black black screen. Then you have to hit the reset button and see if it does it again. You may try this and two or three attempts later it boots to desktop. Today when I tried to start it it ended up bringing up some windows start up wizard. That did something and it started and went to desktop.

Other problems include video driver dropping out temporarily and then reinitiating. It also seems to run really slow in its tasks. You wouldn't believe it has a I7 Processor, 10 gig of ram and I cant remember what the video card is but it is fairly new and reasonably specked. Runs more like a 486.

Have tried reformatting but it didn't seem to help much

I haven't had a dedicated antivirus for a while, trying to find a reasonable free program. Seems a few are free but want you to pay later.

Have you tried running Speccy, this will give you information about your computers specifications?

I would then suggest that you goto the manufacturers site and see if there are any newer drivers etc.

How old is your CMOS battery? It may be time to replace it. A dead CMOS battery can cause some of these problems.

the computer would be at least 5 years old. Don't think cmos battery has ever been changed

Bad RAM, HDD/SSD or corrupt drivers may cause BSOD on startup.
You may wish to test your RAM and HDD.
RAM test:
Start computer and immediately begin pressing F8. Select Memory Test from the options. Run the long test, it'll take a long time.
HDD test:
download and install
SeaTools for Windows
start SeaTools, accept EULA, select the drive your OS is on, basic tests menu, choose SMART, run, hopefully it will pass, basic test menu, select short test. If they both pass drive is OK.
If you continue to have crashes on boot, you most likely have a driver issue, (not windows drivers).

If you don't have a Win7 DVD or Win7 USB thumbdrive, I'd create one, you can obtain a Win7 ISO from TechBench
and make it AIO (all-in-one) with eicfg_removal_utility.zip
You cannot copy and paste an ISO to DVD or USB, you have to have a bootloader. To burn the ISO, use Rufus for USB, ImgBurn or similar for DVD.
FYI: Win7 DVD, ISO, etc. contains all versions of windows ei.cfg is a text file that sets windows version. Utility either removes that file, renames it, or alters it to enable the menu to show all contained versions.
At minimum, I'd create a restore point, if you don't have external storage HDD/SSD, if you do, I'd create a system image, which you can restore to if, for some reason, you don't like what you changed, or if, hopefully not, your system won't boot, or acts weird!
