I have PC connected to a 22in TV via DVI, and I have the HDMI connected to a home theatre system shown below...

Discount Grundig Grundig GUHTS21 2.1 Channel Home Cinema HDMI, Divx DVD & Home Cinema from Cdiscount.co.uk

The sound system has a HDMI port so instead of playing the audio from my PC through the 3.5mm jack (poor quality) I wanted to play the audio through the HDMI cable.

However, when I connect it via HDMI and go to control panel>sound it shows a red arrow saying "not connected".

My graphics card is an integrated radion 4200.

Any ideas?

Steve

Check the HDMI cable for defects. Use a different one if you can somehow, to test.

Could be that the driver isn't working so well or something of that nature.

I was originally using the HDMI cable to connect the PC to the TV and it worked fine...

don't see anything there saying that the HDMI is for input, output only. If there isn't a HDMI in connection (and there doesn't appear to be), then you will never get audio in over HDMI.

I assumed that as the audio system has a hdmi port, audio could be sent from my pc to the system. I assumed this because if I connect my tv to the audio system via hdmi it will play audio from the tv through the system...

Nope, that isn't how it works; that HDMI port is output only. The system is processing/playing the audio all internally. To get audio in over HDMI the system needs to have a HDMI in port.
