Hello all!

I was looking for some help, if possible. Hope this is the right thread.

Yesterday, I came back from work and turn on my home desktop. It started smoothly and okay, as usual. Windows loaded and I attempted to move my mouse and bam. I lost the image and I on my screen and thought it was the screen that stopped working. It's not; I tested it on another computer and its working just fine.

So, currently, the situation is:

I can power on the pc, he does the inicial beep and then nothing else happens. No image on the screen (no HP logo, no BIOS...), the processor light (yellow-ish/orange, is it the processor light) is always off, no blinking and the only thing that happens is that I hear the fans working. Also, the power supply light on the back is on.

I can't figure out what to do since I can't even reach the BIOS (so no testing involved). I appreciate all the good advices you guys can give me.

This is the model of the PC:
HP Pavilion a6542.pt Desktop PC Product Specifications | Suporte HP®
And the only thing that is different from that config are the memories and the graphics card (nVidia 210) that have been replaced a couple of years ago.

Thanks!

Hi, maxie.

Thanks for your reply. I'll check the graphics card and post the results asap.

Regarding that tutorial, I've ready it but I think it only applies if the machine displays any image or processes info at all, which it does not :(

Does your monitor have a power status light, that is--green for power on,orange for standby and black when no power to the monitor? If so,then operate the monitor's power switch which should be on the panel with other controls.Whenever I have even a momentary power cut,my monitor,Benq, won't work until I physically operate the switch.

Hey again. Yep the monitor has that status light but its not the monitor because i tested it on another computer.

Well, I removed the graphics card and the power supply stopped working. No more status light, PC wont turn on even with graphics card back on.

EDIT: got it to power on again, with and without graphics card. Problem remains the same so its not the graphics card :(

Anyway I can assure its the PSU?
I dont have much space on this case for a new PSU. Also, I have no ideal what to pay attention for when buying a PSU. :/

We can only assume it is the PSU as there is no LED light any more ... Of course it could be the Motherboard also which is why i am hesitant to suggest a PSU ....

The PSU still has the LED light, sorry. It stopped working momentarily when I removed the graphics card but I guess it was just because I plug it bad or something.

I also disconnected the HDD, as suggested and nothing happens again. Can't see any errors because I don't have any image. The only led that is always off is the orange one when that flashes whenever the computer is processing something. Which apparently doesnt happen anymore.

If you have a bootable disc, such as Hirens or similar, then try that to see if anything appears on the screen

Without a HDD, you should get a BIOS message.

It's possible that your motherboard has failed. :(

Have you made sure that all of your cables and cards are properly connected?

Sometimes removing the cables/cards and then replacing them can fix connection issues.

 Remember to take anti-static precautions and disconnect your PC from the mains, before doing this.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the latest replies. I've been testing everything and the good news is it was not the HDD (I had a lot of work saved there...). Bad news is it is the motherboard :(.

I am going to invest in a new machine as this is 7/8 yrs old machine and I don't think investing in a new motherboard is a good solution. If I invest in a new motherboard I will prob need to change more stuff to avoid incompatibility issues. So, I guess a new PC is a more wise decision.

Thanks for all the help :)

Were you ever able to boot into the built-in HP hardware diagnostics by tapping the ESC key at boot? This is how to determine the hardware's condition. If the mobo or hard drive have failed it should not run at all.

Nope, I could never reach the BIOS or run that HP diagnosis.

Whenever I powered it on I had no image at all.

BTW, happy holidays to all :)
