Following the windows updates this wed, my pc wouldn't even start from a system restore.

It was maybe heading that way as it was taking 20 minutes to boot up - despite 8 Gb RAM to help it along.

I think one of the problems may be that it has never seemed top do many restore pointsd and there was only one choice for before the updates but even that didnt work. Now setting about the hours of work working out how to restore files from Livedrive.

First thing I notice - can't set the time to 24 hour clock (12 hr clock irritates m,e). Despite going into setting and chhoosing the capital HH for hours it still stays as 12 hour clock. Whats can the problem be here?

Can't you do a system restore to a date prior to the problems? What error message do you get?
short time format is HH:mm?
long format is HH:mm:ss?

Its too late now as I have restored to factory settings. There was only one restore point showing and it wouldn't work. But then I have had a BSOD about once every 2 weeks for a while now and when I do a system restore it says it hasn't worked then on a reboot it works again.

Suggest you test the memory as the BSODs, time setting, and System Restore failures may be stemming from flaky memory- How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+

Thanks will give that a go, but it says I will need to use two memory sticks and only have one at the moment as the teenagers have nicked them all.
