On my ASUS P9X79 WS, the top PCI-e slot (blue) has x16 assigned to it. It is paired with a black slot below it. If run a GPU card in the top blue slot and nothing in the black slot, the card will run on x16. If I put GPU cards in both the top blue slot and the black one below it, both will run at only x8. What I'm wondering is what would happen if I had a GPU in the blue slot and a x8 card in the black slot? Would the GPU still drop to x8?
