The moving van has a flat tire. I am in the process of moving programs, settings, and files from an XP SP3 machine to a Windows 7 Professional box and trusted PCMover to do the job. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a weak 5. The main problem was that it failed to copy data folders. Why? In two cases, when it encountered a problem file, the moving van aborted instead of skipping and notifying the user. In the rest I haven't a clue. PCMover just didn't move them.

All of the program files were transferred and only a few would not run in 7. Not a surprise and easily fixed by reinstalling.

Don't get me wrong. Most of my executables and settings were accurately transferred for which I am grateful. But I don't know what I would have done had I not connected the new box via the LAN.

Personally, I prefer to not to use these data transfer programs. First of all, my data are completely separated from the OS - are on a physically different hard drive and nowhere near the "default" "My ..." folders. Second, I prefer to install the software on the new machine myself, rather than trust a third-party program to transfer the installation. But that's just me.
