hi guys :) hope i can get sum help with this

I've got windows 7 on my PC and netbook and created a homegroup between them to share my documents, music n that...since then my main PC is playing up with certain applications saying i don't have sufficient permissions to do stuff. like in Firefox when i save a picture to 'My Pictures' folder it says i don't have sufficient permissions to save it there, but saving to desktop gives me no such problems. also in itunes, it says it cannot save my itunes library because i don't have enough access privileges.

i checked my permissions for my shared folders and they have 'full control' under my user account - unless im not checking it properly...is it something to do with my homegroup? i have my shared folders on homegroup as 'share with homegroup (read/write)'.

Sharing on Windows 7 has two levels of permissions.

First level is at the Share level, (this is the classic share system used since Windows 3.1),
The second level is the File level security permissions provided by the NTFS files system that was introduced with Windows NT.

The second level permissions apply to all files both local and network files and folders, and are persistent over a system change.

If you use the system functions to redirect your user folders to existing files, on a location, other than the default, or copy back an archive copy these permissions will still be set to those of the previous OS.

You will need to change these permissions manually to allow access by the users on the New OS, although the user name may be the same the actual coding used at the OS level will be different

To do this right click on the folder root concerned and use the security tab to add your current user to the permissions. You may also need to take ownership of these files which may be accomplished using the advanced security tab

thanks, i thinks its fixed. i waited a bit to see if any errors came up again. owner was under 'SYSTEM' for some reason so i swithced it over to my account. I've saved a million pics without that crappy error and also deleted/added some songs to itunes to try and invoke that message again - all seems good now.

Standard Windows workgroup based sharing requires that you have users with the same name present on both systems and that the named user on the sharing system has sufficient NTFS permissions on the shared files to perform the actions required by the remote user.

create a dummy user on each machine with the same name as the user existing on the other machine, and ensure that this user has the required security permissions at file level.

Alternately move or copy the files you wish to share to the public folders

Actually I want to transfer all the data that is there on my old laptop to my new laptop which is over 200 GB so i wanted to just plug in my both laptops and then share the D: drive and give full permission to everyone just like in the old XP then just view all the workgroup computers and then copy the files and folders shared by that computer ok thanx for the help and thank you very much for the help it is really appreciated. One moer thing I wanted to ask is that If i install the 64 bit version of windows 7 then my 32 bit programs should work flawlessly and also if i install 64 bit programs then they will also work flawlessly??

I run 64 bit and 32 bit windows 7 and I have no issues running the same applications on both systems.

I always try if possible to install 64 Bit versions on the 64 Bit OS but have not had any 32 bit applications that would not install and run on the 64 bit system, of course YMMV :) .

The only potential issues would be for service type applications that need low level system access but I think that the developers of this type of application would be more likely to produce the 64 bit versions anyway.
