Hello I have an old hard drive and just recently bought a docking station. I have been trying to delete some files off of it and transfer new files. It says I need permission.

I have searched around on the internet and found the two solutions below.. neither worked for me.

How can I get permission to transfer files from my old hard drive - Microsoft Community

Howdo I to change permission on an external hard drive to get - Microsoft Community

I have tried multiple times I truly don't believe I am doing it wrong. Is there another answer? Thank you.

Thank you for the reply but I am not trying to transfer my old files onto my new computer.. I am trying to use my old hard drive as an external hard drive.

My main problem is I am not able to delete about 50 GBs worth of 'Program Files' and 'Windows' files that were on my old computer.

Oddly enough I am able to delete video files. I wasn't able to put any new files on though because those were 'hidden'. So that aspect of it is solved.

So I still am looking for a way to delete all these program files.

I downloaded the take ownership.. I don't know what is going wrong.. I think I have ownership but it just isn't allowing me to delete these 'Program Files' and 'Windows' files.

I can delete any text, video, or music file. I can move any file onto the old hard drive. I just can't delete these files. Whenever I do it says 'You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Juiceimus-HP/Juiceimus to make changes to this folder.'

Let me make sure I understand you correctly.
**You can transfer files from the external hard drive (old) to the internal hard drive (new). Y/N

**You can transfer files from the (new) hard drive to the (old) hard drive. Y/N

**You are unable to delete files from which drive? (new or old)

What I getting at is this: Move everything from the old drive that you want to save to the new drive and then format the old drive.
Results would be; you save the things you wanted installed on the new drive and you would have a fresh formatted external drive you could use as you desire.
If it was my computer that is what I would do.
Hang around and see if any other members have other suggestions.

Yes I can transfer stuff from the new drive to the old drive or vice versa. I am unable to delete certain files from the old drive.

I was thinking about reformatting it but I was hoping to find another solution but I imagine this will be the best one. Thank you for all your help!!

I am going to go ahead and mark this as solved.
