Did you download memtest86+ from Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool? if not use that. There is another version named memtest86 which is not as good as this one. Why the names have to be so similar is beyond me. But, the one I linked to is pretty much the industry standard. It is not a perfect test, but is the best we have. In the middle of the page you can download either the ISO.ZIP file or the Auto installer for USB.zip. I use the 4.20 version as several people have had trouble getting the 5.01 version to continue running. They are basically the same test. If you choose the 5.01 version, upon boot up it will tell you to press certain keys, do not press anything it will begin running on it's own and will run until you tell it to stop. It needs to be run for 8 passes all at one time. The purpose of the test is to test the memory, but to also test the Dimm Slots. You can run both sticks for 8 passes or until you get an error. If you get an error, stop the test. Then we will be running one stick at a time in each slot, then switch sticks and do the same. That is the only way to determine whether it is the ram or the Dimm slots, which does happen. Run the sticks in the slots recommended by the motherboard manufacturer. And, also always download drivers from Asus web site. You will always get more current drivers from the web site than from their driver disk.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I don't mind explaining at all.

Yes i used the same site, auto usb'd it onto my usb drive, and ran the test from there. 5.01 worked flawlessly for me. I guess tonight i will be tested the other 2 dimm slots ive never used before. It also crossed my mind, i think on the same day the bsods started happening, i raised my ram speed from 1333 to 1866 and then the bsods kicked in shortly after. i wonder what will happen if i lower it back down to 1333?

You should be able to run it at the manufacturers rated speeds, just check CPUz on the SPD tabs or on the package the ram came in, or on the white sticker on the side of the sticks. It will tell you the frequency, first 4 timings and the voltage. They will run a the specified speed, if you use the correct timings and voltage. I would still use the same slots you are going to run them in. The empty slots will make no difference. Just be sure you run the frequency, timings and voltage specified.

I set both sticks back to 1333. I let the bios auto do the voltages/timings. Now we wait for the next bsod ;) if there is then i know its not the ram speed problem

That's fine, it's your computer, do it however you want. But, it's a very simple process. If I paid for 1866 ram, I wouldn't want to run it at 1333.

I don't blame you. But if you don't put in the timings, voltages and frequency and run memtest86+, you'll never know if it will.

You should have a section in the overclocking section of BIOS where you can set it to XMP, if your ram has XMP values, which it most likely does. Otherwise, you can set it by hand.

So i brought the voltages down from 1.650 to 1.5 and the timing is now correct! Hopefully i can use this ram to its full potential. I never messed with those setting before, it must have been running like that since i built it in 2011. Hopefully this put an end to the bluescreens. I will memtest it overnight!

Set Your timings to 9-11-9-27 and voltage at 1.5V (Dram Voltage) and frequency to 1866. or You can enable XMP in bios. I prefer to set BIOS to manual and set everything myself, but I'm a control freak.

I actually set the voltage back to 1.65 because thats what patriot printed on the ram, newegg is false with its 1.5v claim. Currently running memtest, 1 pass so far with 0 errors. I noticed a whole bunch of other timing settings, do I have to worry about those? I only changed the primary timings. Also what should my 5th command timing be? I have it set to auto but I can
pick between 1-3 also

If you are talking about 1T or 2 T, 2T is usually more stable than 1T. I've never heard of 3T. I hope that's what you are asking. Go with what is printed on the ram modules, they will be correct. Newegg lists the timings as 9-11-9-27 and I would use 2T as it's more stable, but if you set it at 1T and can pass, you are good. Use the 1.65V for Dram Voltage if that's printed on the modules. If you set it before at 1866 and 9-9-9-24 at 1.5V, that may very well be why you were having BSODs. The Voltage and timings has to be right. any more questions, just ask.

Im hoping it will fix the bsod, but the thing is it also passed memtest 13 times running at 9-9-9-24. I think the old voltage was also 1.65

But, if I understand you correctly, it passed with those timings at 1333, you are now running at 1866, I believe. That's a big difference. And I hope you set the correct timings for 1866. Ram will run right at certain frequency and timings. When you change the frequency, you almost always have to change the timings and voltage. For example, your ram will also run correctly at 1600, but the timings and usually voltage will be different than the timings at 1333 or 1866. Ram is extremely picky and everything has to be right.

13 passes were with the 1866mhz. For a long time this ram was running at 1333 but after I set it to 1866 the bsods started happening. But now im hoping the slightly tweaked timing and voltage would make a difference
