Hi
I have a strange problem on my PC.

Since window seven 32 bit, clean install, it seem to have phantoms drive

I tried everything, 9antirisu software and so on, reinstall and so.

This was a clean install.

On system manager, in disk I have 4 « ! » error message saying
“Systemfile driver problem WPD”, then “error code 10”
But there are no drives!

I reinstall the driver and so search all the solutions on the net, reset, and still get these exclamation points in Device Manager.
uninstalling from Device manager do nothing, it reappears soon, I may deactivate, but that’s all.

I tried to go in “system management!, and supress the letter sand delete the phantom drives (regular and formal way), If I do so, I got the exclamation mark in device manager.

Or I can attribute letter to them, then no more exclamation mark in device manager… But then also, when I look in Computer, I see all the useless phantom drives (named W, X, Y and Z to this point)

The point is I can use USB drive, i have usually 4 externals drives or USB attached, and they works smoothly.

So this is mainly an annoyance in « Device manager » or in » Computer », but how could I settle it.

I try a “repair install” (without the external drive and USB devices on, of course),
I tried many solutions on the net for this WPD problem, but most don’t apply as my USB drive and flash work well.
And the allegedly “Fix it solution” from Microsoft do loops after loop without any success.

A solution would be so appreciated.

Sorry for my English (I am French)
Marie

PS : I was not sure choosing the thread topic (!)

If so, have you installed the Card Reader drivers? (if you have a card reader)

You might try uninstalling all the USB devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager and restarting the computer. (No USB devices connected until afterward, of course).

Windows will reinstall all the drivers again on start up, correcting any driver corruption, if any exists that cause this issue.

It had been done, of course ( among the first sept I tried )without any result.
I also tried do that witd "devce manager" and with "administrative tool "drive manager", rebooting and so. I did aslo "hard" rebooting, device awant, but no result.
I think that the solution should be in "drive mangager"... But everything I tried fail.

Too bad. It's odd because that WPD driver is for USB devices. Other than Repair Install, and reloading the USB drivers I'm stumped.

Have you tried running System File Checker? (Start > type: sfc > Click sfc.exe)

Marie,
My intuition is going to be pointing me in a certain direction.

First, please follow this procedure, to the letter:

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Hi
It is done.
Let me recall that prior to Window Clean install (last month) these "drive" were fine.

One think : I deleted the name of the HP restaure partition, and rename some drives I use ofter with disk management(that was beforde the clean install)

Thank you,
Marie

marie,

Am I correct? You have no problem. simply the info shown is not correct?

How many gigabytes of ram do you have? Update system specs to reflect the number of GB.

SMART is not a drive but rather a system of reporting a drive status.

Google S.M.A.R.T.

carry out following please:
HOW TO POST A SNAPSHOT OF DISK MANAGEMENT DISPLAY
Run disk management:
WIN |
type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER
This method gives you a display without the unneeded navigation pane.
WIN=key with Microsoft logo on top.

Maximize the output of Disk Management:
Maximize the output of Disk Management:
ALT-Spacebar key combo | X key (selects Maximize) |
Drag the field separators (such as between Status and Capacity) to show entire field.

Make a snapshot:
WIN |
type SNIPPING | ENTER | New
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save

Post the snapshot:

ram and screenshots

Hi Karlsnooks
And thank you for your interest.

I have 4 Go of ram (the max for 32 bit), wich leave 3,24 Go Physical, (46% use)
and 6,48 Go virtual ( 4,86 avalaible)

Fior the problem, usb devices are working, external hardrives, external flas and so.
the problem is mostly the unexistent drive show in disk management (or the exclamation maark in device manager).
And that Window don't boot if one of the external drives (the H one) is pluggeg in the USB. (others drives don't do that)
When H drive is unplugged, everything work, and H it is acessible and working if plugged after boot.

Here are the screen shots
1 - disk manager part 1 as usual
2 - disk manager part 2 (unable to capture the whole lower part in one screenshot).
3- disk manager with all usb drive disconnected. (you still see unexistant drives 1 to 4)
4 - screen shot of My Computer with the phantom disks, and device manager errors.

For the last one, usually all the 4 fantom disks appear in My PC, unless I remove their attributed letter in disk manager.
To show the problem, I removed the the letter from W and Y whos images dissappear from "My comuter", but then create error (exclamation point) in device manager.
To show again, I uninstalled W which reisntalled itself and make again an exclamation point as you see.
And I desactivated Y which stay so (arrow mark)

Usually all drives are alike, but I wanted to show the differents options.
The problem is mostly these disk impossible to remove from disk manager and which appera as 4, 5, 6 and 7 and are pointless.

Thank you so much for your time and expertise!

Marie

Marie,
One problem was caused by language differences. Here the abbreviation for gigabyte is GB.

Do you perhaps have a dvd/cd clone program installed? they can cause part of what you are seeing.

Let me answer a couple of other posts and I'll be back.

Marie,

convert your Firelite and Indigo drives from Fat32 to NTFS.

Convert FAT32 to NTFS with no Data Loss

Go to an elevated command prompt and run CHKDSK T: /r
where T: is an example you insert the letter assigned to one of your drives presently formatted as FAT32.

If any errors are show, then run the command again. If errors continue to show, then you need to move the data off and throw the disk away.

Run chkdsk over both drives. the /r option is not really an option in your case. You must use /r

======================================================

Now both of your disks have passed chkdsk and we can proceed to convert.

Once again go to an elevated command prompt.

Here is the command you want to run this time:
CONVERT T: /FS:NTFS

where once again you substitute the drive letter of one of your fat32 disks.

============================================
============================================
Go To an Elevated Command Prompt

Elevated command prompt = Run CMD.EXE as administrator

WIN | type CMD.EXE | do not hit Enter |
in the PROGRAMS list, right-click on CMD.EXE |
choose "Run as administrator" |

Click on the YES button (if such appears)

WIN key = key with Microsoft log on top

for the guru:
WIN | type CMD.EXE | CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER key combo | ALT+Y keycombo

Hi Karls.
Sorry for the delay.

If i remove Firelite and Indigo device, then actualise their removal in the the device manager, (both in hard drive and USB section), the problem is still the same.

It is not with these two disks (that are not always plugged) that I have problem.

It is with the five blank drives in Drive manager, and the WPD error that this cause in Device manager.

I maybe blind, but I quite don't understang how converting two (well working) diks (listed clearly in disk manager) will remove five blanks disk attribution previous to their installation.

By the way, I noticed that these blanks (phantom) disk also appears in Bios booth, and that the Bios sometime give error message, saying that "they are nos partion in the 0 drive", were are Windows and other data...
But strangely, Windons open, works properly and so.

Insn that a way to delete obsolete blank disk from the registry, or with a disk management software, as windows one refuse to do it ?
.

Hi Karl,
Sorry for the delay.

If i remove Indifo et Firelite drive, then actualise their removal in Device manager (both drives and USB), the problem is still here.

I don't need these diks.
And to be honnest, I don't understant how converting these two (workin) disks will remove five unrelated blank drives, existing since Windows installation.

Indigo and Firelite, are clearly nommed and atributed in device manager, with size and all.

The problem is not with these, (they work fine), but with the 5 blanks unnamed and useless ((phantom) drives in disk manager, and the WPD problent they cause in device manager.

Is'nt that a way to remove them from the registry?
Could'nt a drive management software (magic partition or else) remove blank drives?
That sure would be closer to the problem.

By the way, I noticed that theses phantom drive appears in Bios boot...
That bios say that it cannot open, beacuse de O drive have no partition, eventought it does and contain Windows, data and so and have partitions.
And that strangely, Window open quite smootly, and works properly.

Thank you again.

Finally a solution, and soooooo easy !

Hi,
Incredible but true !

After monts of useless tattempts, i finally reinstalled (clean installed) window seven integral.
Of course, all the sames problems occured again (phantom drive, WPD error and so)

BUT, this time. I founded the easiest solution.

First I deleted the HP recovery, and merged another void (emty) partition with C (OS) disck (with Paragon software)

And second, I used a little piece of software Slim Driver(freeware avalaible on cnet)
wich founded (and choosed) seven missing drivers.
Among them were the WPD

A dream. :D
No more phanton misk, no more WPD problem... And so easily.

Thank you all for your help !
And if some have these annoying problem, give this solution a try .

Amanda.
