This has been around since the mid to late 90's, and it falls into a class of diagnoses called Photosensitive Seizure Disorders

One famous case from 1997: CNN - Japanese cartoon triggers seizures in hundreds of children - December 17, 1997

That's why you need to be careful when choosing your Avatars. Note that static images don't cause the problem, it is only the animated ones. There are 3 main triggers that cause this problem. Firstly, the speed/frequency of the animation can cause issues with people who are susceptible to this condition (which is a form of epilepsy), although the trigger speed can vary between individuals. Secondly, the actual image itself and what part of it is being animated (e.g. a striped ball which is spinning). Thirdly, the colours used in the animation, with alternating colours of high contrast being the most problematic. The more of these features present in an animated image, the more likely it is for a sufferer of Photosensitive Seizure Disorders to be afflicted.

All the video game manuals I've read over the years have shown me plenty of those warnings towards the beginning of the book (least I think it's at the beginning...yah...the beginning...?), heh. I'm glad happenstance has given genes that aren't afflicted; would be annoying. Interesting things the human body does. I've read somewhere that there's some issue when one sneezes, one will pass out. Something like sneezing syncope or something.

Unfortunately with advanced visual display technology, the consequences have been omitted. In video game manual's, the companies warn about the side effects of long term gaming. I wouldn't let my children watch TV or other forms of visual interaction for no more than 30 minutes a day.

I had a year experience running EEG machines in the past. The machine is to investigate anyone which suspected as having any form of epilepsy. The EEG exam includes photo sensitivity step by flashing light in various frequencies from 10 to 60 Hertz. If the patient has certain degree of sensitivity the EEG's 12 channel stylus will write spiked-brain-wave activity onto the running paper.

One thing that I noticed. Though I'm considered normal but sometimes a strobe light will annoy me much.
