Ping spikes during online games

Hi, i am experiencing ping spikes whilst I am playing online games and I am looking for any assistance in solving this problem.

I usually play on severs with a ping of less than 125, but randomly whilst i am mid-game my ping will begin to spike to around 500-600 which lasts for around 2 minutes then it falls back to down to my original ping.

This problem only occurs in Windows 7. My router is a Netgear DG834Gv2.

What carrier? Also are you in a city or small town etc? Might help locating where the loads are coming from. Also, have you contacted your carrier letting them know whats going on? They can check to see if its on their end.

I had that problem some time ago, when I called them it turned out the lines were actually brittle and old, and needed replacement, the morning dew was causing my internet to no longer work until the afternoon sun hit it!

By carrier i assume you mean Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Yes, i have talked to them on their support forums.
They first switched me from interlaced to fastpath but that did not solve the problem. After that they asked me to download a network diagnosis tool and to run it the next time i had the spike. A member on their forums told me from reading the logs that: “the problem is your local network, as the pings should be lower than 1ms to your router but they seem to be spiking up to 700ms” and asked me if I was connected to the router wirelessly, which I am not, I am connected via Ethernet. After I told him that he then asked if anyone else was doing anything to “strain the router”, the only other person that connects to it is my sister but the ping spikes happen regardless of her being connected.

The ping spikes do not occur in Windows XP, they only happen in Windows 7. They are a recent problem, as it did not occur when I first installed Windows 7.

Hello i am experiencing the same problem and for me as well it didnt occur until i moved to windows 7. i think everyone is trying to find a fix to this but have been unsuccessful i have read the post about the error reports and i have disabled my error reporting to see if that was the problem in which it was not. im going to post a new thread about this with all of the info i have concerning it and all the things i have done in an attempt to fix it. i will post anything i find here for you .

I have the same problem.. I was always running at 60ms in WOW, now with Windows7 i am up in the 200ms.. everything is the same but the OS.. it is Beta.. Expect this.. The tweaks dont work.. but u can try putting all your ISP info into your ip4 area.. (ip dns sub that might help.. check your AV settings to on your firewall) also make sure your not running your AV firewall and Win Firewall..

all i can say for now is i havent found a fix, and i have tried, wait til the real copy and things will be fine

First let me say hello and welcome to sevenforums.

First what kind of router?
Do youl have homegroup or workgroup?
Have you searched seven forums for similar problems?
do You have IP-6 enabled or disabled?
What games give you the most grief?

I was thinking about dropping back down to Vista64 again just to see if it helps out a bit. Maybe just a 20GB partition or something but it seems like everything ive tried hasnt really solved it.

I joined a server last night and my ping kept going from 60/70 up to about 130 or 140. It made it absolutely terrible to try and play.

I quickly restarted and then tried the exact same server in Vista64 and it was perfect at about 35.

I too went from Win7 to XP Pro 64, and my ping is at 20.. so its the BETA version of windows.. it is to be expected.. I can live with 100ms for a few more months.. i am totally in Love with WiN7. (i hate vista, BEYOND hate)

Hi all,

I never normally post but this issue took me a good 4 hours to resolve....

I was on a solid 50Mbp line on speedtest.net installed windows 7 (previously Vista) and went down to 6Mbp and really laggy ping spikes.

Everyone told me it was the isp but from reading this post I knew it was windows 7 and refused to give up.

Tried all of the above fixes from cmd commands / audio fixes / Graphical Fixes / antivirus fixes / bandwith reservation.. / disabling IPV6 and so on.....

All had a slight but mimimal effect but did not fix it.

The last thing I tried was updating my routers Firmware and it fixed the issue.

Im no tech expert but can safley say that there is a diffrence in the windows 7 internet code / settings.

For info router was a NetGear Wireless N Router

So as a first priority before installing windows 7

a) make sure you download your modem / router drivers
b) update your router settings.
