Please explain OEM rule for this situation.

I backup irregularly, maybe twice a week, then once in two or three weeks. Its just a home PC.

This morning I chose to use an image to restore BUT as I have recent documents not imaged instead of pasting the image over the corrupt Win 7, I whipped out another drive to replace the existing C, and pasted the healthy win 7 onto it. This way I can recover my files from the old C at my leisure.

BUT........ when after imaging & rebooting Microsoft claims the WIN 7 is not genuine. And I know it is genuine. So what's going on here? This was never a problem with XP.

So you are using the same mobo obviously so I can't see what the problem is how much gear is on the image mate? I am guessing that the image has the old Windows or part thereof on it and maybe the confusion?

Now this might sound pretty obvious you did use the same CD? - not being funny just that I have a few lying around and have accidentally used the wrong one before.

Personally I like cloning a drive for just this instance but still image I just regularly clone the C: drive as well.

Well I was thinking that Gary but I was just wondering if the image is corrupted somehow and " leaking" stuff back into the install.

I am just wondering Alf what did you mean by "pasting" the healthy 7 onto the new drive? is that copy / paste or a clean install onto the new drive because as you say there should not be a problem.

It's almost certainly because of the IRST drivers, which are too fragile to survive a backup/restore operation.

Thanks for all the replies guys. to the early replies I'm well practiced at backups. This is the second Win7 OEM CD I have bought. This happened on the first one too so I thought I had been 'fooled' and bought another OEM copy elsewhere. Still same drama. Imaging backups result in windows claiming not genuine on restore.

I don't believe I'm in error. I have used in the past several image backup products on the first OEM. All failed. The HDDs are new. Also I don't know about how to reload the Product Key again at anytime except during initial installation.

I do this for all drives spinners whatever.

Personally I would wipe or secure erase the drive before anything using DISKPART clean all or the wipe in Partition Wizard (handy tool for all sorts of jobs)

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. < free version both take a while but you then have a "new" drive.

The other alternative is to call Microsoft explain the problem and ask for advice.
