Ok so I think one of my buddies messed up my windows vista cuz it will not boot windows anymore it goes to launch repair windows or launch windows normally. I tried launching repair but nothing happens same with launch windows normally. So I got a windows 7 install cd and I pressed f8 and windows loads files then I see the windows 7 logo saying starting windows but after that it goes to a black screen with the mouse on the screen. And it stays on that screen. I don't have the cd that came with my laptop, is there anything I can do to get windows running again?? Please help.

Try going to the boot menu and load the CD and possibly custom install to keep the files you previously had or make a clean installation.

Do you want to repair Vista or just install Win7? Do you have files to retrieve from Vista first?

Here is the link to download and burn to CD a Vista repair CD if you want to boot it to run Startup Repair on Vista: How to Make a Windows Vista Repair Disk If You Don’t Have One - How-To Geek

My laptop has vista right now and needs to be repaired but I was thinking to just install windows 7(I have the windows 7 installation cd) and start from skretch. So how would go about doing this? With the cd in the drive do I press f8 or something when the comp starts up?

Ok so I pressed f10 at bootup and it took me to windows boot manager it says windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. 1 insert ur windows installation disc and restart ur comp 2 choose ur language and click next 3 click repair ur comp. Then under it it says the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. What should I do??

The problem is you are trying to use Win7 DVD to repair Vista. You'll need to make a Vista repair disk if you want to do that.

To install Win 7: Boot from CD - How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD
or use the one-time Boot Menu key given on first screen then select DVD drive to boot.

Select Custom Install, use Drive Options to Delete all partitions, create New one(s) as you wish, then Format before installing Win7 to first partition.

The installer is nearly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via Optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the SUpport Downloads webpage for your model computer. You might want to put your wireless driver on a stick or CD during install so you can get online faster if it needs loading at startup.

It boots into the WIn7 DVD, shows the WIn7 color flames logo, then goes black with cursor?

Where did you get the Win7 DVD? Has it been used before to successfully install?

Check SATA controller setting in BIOS setup: Set to AHCI first, then IDE if necessary.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install, swap RAM, Test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes: http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Test your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Yes gregrocker that is what shows on the screen a black screen and the cursor. And I. Got the windows 7 cd from my friend. I downloaded the vista repair file and just need to burn it to a cd. Is that my only option?

How do you plan to activate Win7? Unless your friend provided a valid Product Key, you're better off buying a new copy of Win7 or repairing Vista.

Once you burn the Vista Repair to CD, boot it and run Startup Repair. Report back if this fails.

If you did not burn Recovery Disks for your computer, then you may be able to run the Recovery Partition. You will need to look on first bootup screen for keys to press to Run Recovery, or check your Manual - which can be found on the maker's Support Downloads webpage for your model computer.

What is your computer model? Please fill in your System Specs in bottom left corner of your post.

Ask your buddy exactly what he did with your computer, as this can help fix it.

Now I can't even lauch startup repair it says Windows boot manager it says windows failed to start. Did you try each of these steps:

Check SATA controller setting in BIOS setup: Set to AHCI first, then IDE if necessary.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install, swap RAM, Test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes: Memtest86 - Download Page

Test your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Are you now booting the Vista Repair CD to attempt repair? The error you are getting is not one you would get if you successfully booted the CD to run Repair. Follow these steps to make sure you are booting CD: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Look on first boot screen for key given to press to Run Recovery. If not there, look in your Manual which you can download at the manufacturer's Support Downloads webpage for your model computer to learn how to run Recovery, then press those keys to try it.

If Recovery will not run from boot, the next thing to attempt is to wipe the HD to remove any possible obstacles to a Win7 clean install.[

Try tapping repeatedly F10 at bootup to see if Factory Recovery is still an option. If so it will restore the laptop to factory condition.

If not, you'll need to use the Vista Repair CD to get Win7 started. Have you created one yet using the link provided earlier, and attempted to boot it? You want to run Startup Repair repeatedly to see if it will start.

Let us know what you are doing.

Are you booting the CD?

Does it say "Press Any Key to Boot CD/DVD" when you restart with the CD in drive?

After you press a key, does it then show the files loading with a progress bar?

If it doesn't, then you are not booting the Repair CD. Follow these steps:

Boot from CD - How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD

Vista Repair CD should look simialr to this once it's booted: http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/51100-repair-cd-system-repair-disk.html

You want to accept any offered Repair. If that fails, you want to choose Startup Repair from the list and run it repeatedly until it starts.

I don't think the laptop is reading the cd I might have to burn another one
