Hi Folks,

Hope someone can help - because I'm baffled at this stage!

Got a BSOD the other day (IRQL...) Ran WhoCrashed and found it was the ntoskrnl file causing bother. Got a fix from the MS website for the blue screen error and all was ok then. (Also, ran memtest86 and all ok). But then another BSOD (can't remember full name but it contained 'Exception')

Everything i checked seemed to relate to drivers. Decided to try Driver Verifier. Created a restore point and rebooted. BSOD again a short time later. Then when it reboots, my laptop says:

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0f: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
Operating System Not Found

I think this usually points to HDD issue. But I checked the HDD connection etc and all is ok. Ran Seagate HDD diagnostic and everything fine. Can see all the files when I connect it to a second laptop. Shows in BIOS no problem.

I read that you can disable driver verifier using an offline registry utility. Tried this but not 100% sure how to use it so quit! (NT Password and Registry editor)

When I run the W7 recovery, it does not show me Windows 7 in the list of OS. Yet when I run bootrec.exe /fixmbr etc, all passes fine.

Can anyone help?! I'm going out of my mind! Your help is very much appreciated :)

Would have more options if it was a desktop machine.
Have a look at this thread before attempting a reinstall of the operating system at least though. There are some recovery methods you haven't tried yet, also some additional bootrec commands.

Thanks for the reply Maguscreed. :)

I ran the command prompts in the thread, but unfortunately they didn't work. However, when I ran bootrec /RebuildBcd, it said that it found an installation of windows, and did I want to add this to the boot menu (yes, No, All).

I decided to google this, and I came across some forum posts elsewhere where some people were having issues with dual booting with XP and W7. Someone mentioned using a free partiton manager (Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to boot computer directly to manage partition.) and going in to make the partition with windows 7 a primary partition and then make it active.

I didn't think this would work, but decided to burn the program to disk and run it (I had nothing to lose!). My C: drive partition was primary, but inactive, so I was able to right click it and make it 'Active'. Rebooted and got the Bootmgr is missing message as in the thread link you gave. Ran the Windows 7 recovery disc. Low and behold, the OS was showing in the list. Did a startup repair and rebooted - everything is fine now!

Eventvwr is showing clean now also. No errors :D

Many thanks for the point in the right direction :D

Still baffled though as to how it happened in the first place (partition inactive) and how there are now no errors in eventvwr.
