please help. Product key invalid

Hello. so i did a Fresh install about 5 months ago and bare foot kid helped me alot. i just got a new 300gb raptor HD and i'm installing windows 7 from an upgrade version of windows 7 ultimate. i am following this guide for Clean install from upgrade version that i followed last time.

i am entering my product key in and unchecking the Automatically activate windows when i'm online box and it still says its invalid.

please help

Did you already try OPTION THREE in the tutorial to see if it will activate afterwards?

been on the phone with microsoft. the told me to reinsert the cd.. while i was on desktop... run the install exe and select upgrade version and than use product key and it will work. trying it now

The method Brink gave you with the registry workaround is easier than the Repair Install which MS is having you run, but either will work.

This happens when you clean the HD before reinstall, which is the best way but also causes the Installation DVD at bootup to see no prior OS so that it cannot pass a flag allowing Upgrade version key up front during install.

The solution is to leave the key box blank during install and do one of the workarounds given in Brink's tutorial after install which will allow activation with key.
