please help to solve COM SURROGATE error

its a folder created by me on that hardisk... i dont know if somebody moves it somewhere else but its quite strange that its not there as if i never created it... but as far as im concern.. thats the only folder i notice is missing... and another problem... while im backuping... when its almost end... there are some errors some files cannot be copied... i just skip it... but when i check what im copying to other pc... the picture that im supposely skipped due to unreadable is there.... so i assume the error is not the original file but another... but i still dont understand... *sigh* ..

at the moment im downloading and installing it... will see how it goes... at the moment due to the COM Surrogate.. its hard to enter some folders... it crashes... my god what is wrong here... is it true that NEro causing this??

The folder you are missing may be there but hidden/hidden and a system file for some reason. Attributes sometimes get added through some unknown process in Windows. Files that cannot be copied/moved are files that are currently in use, and they should not be files that are important anyway. In other words, they should be system files and not user files.

Which disk do you want to test. Disks that are in the computer, or external disks?

Where was the folder originally located? Can you open an http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html and change directory to that folder?
cd C:\folder1\folder2\folder3\etc
based on the directory structure and the location of the folder originally.

Run the diagnostics on the first two disks to scan the disks in your computer.

The folder may still be there. There are a couple reasons it may not be visible:
  1. The attributes somehow were changed and it is hidden and a system file.
  2. The disk has corrupt sectors where the folder exists, and so the folder is not able to be accessed to display or open.

The hard disk is not reliable, unfortunately. This may be why you are having the errors you are having with COM Surrogate. You will have to replace the drive. If it is that new, it is covered under the manufacturer's warranty and you can get a free replacement (minus the cost of shipping perhaps). Hopefully that is good news.

You're welcome. Try not to stress and take a break; watch a movie or something to get your mind off it. We may be able to recover that folder you are missing if you are patient and go through the troubleshooting steps.

Btw is it okay if i go into safe mode and backup my files?

This is a good method to backup your files. You are less likely to have problems in safe mode.

What brand of hDD can u suggest? I know there are many good brands out there.. Simply said what brand should i avoid?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I used to tell people to avoid Western Digital, but they've really improved their support and the quality of their products over the past six years. There really are no manufacturers to avoid, although it probably is best to stick with the bigger names. You mostly have to look out for bad drives made by any manufacturer.

When I shop for hard drives, I do a search online through Amazon, New Egg, Tigerdirect, etc. and try to read through the reviews. If a drive has very few users with failures/bad reviews and has a 4 to 5 star rating (out of five) overall, I consider it a good drive. If you want to be really careful, look only for drives with 4.5 to 5 stars and a lot of reviews. Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi are good to look at.

If you want further help, post a thread in Hardware & Devices - Windows 7 Forums with what price range you are looking for and tell them you want a reliable drive.

okay maybe i will give WD a chance this time.. but i heard the WD green is not good ..

unfortunately... my country is quite poor with new tech where we can hardly find any updated hardwares to choose from... its very limited here... we even dont have the SAMSUNG F4 hdd... which is the very first im looking for..

so i just look for the WD hardisk 1.5TB to replace mine :( ...

Sadly the shop where i bought my last HDD only provide 1 month warranty... which is quite stupid and irrelevant... but thats how it is... and thus i have to spend some and get a new one... the reason i bought Samsung is bcoz my previous one works perfectly fine and its been 4 years now... its just my bad luck to get the rotten ones...

and finally... if i already bought the hardisk... is it okay if i run diagnostic test on it first externally before fully using it? just to make sure the same thing did not happen twice... and should i run the advanced test as well although it says that it may delete some data? and i have read about full formatting the hardisk for the first use which is going to take a very long time.. is that true?

That's too bad that your options are limited. The drive you are looking to buy has four stars on Amazon after 602 reviews, three stars on NewEgg after 581 reviews, 3.5 stars on Tigerdirect after 34 reviews, so it may be fine.

Test it out of the box if your warranty period is that short.

and should i run the advanced test as well although it says that it may delete some data?
If you have backed up your data, run the advanced test to see if you can recover any of the bad drive.

and i have read about full formatting the hardisk for the first use which is going to take a very long time.. is that true?
There are mixed feelings about this on these forums. I think a full format right out of the box is a good idea to make sure the good sectors are properly allocated in case any sectors were damaged during shipping or the drive was not properly tested after manufacturing.

Hello i will look for the new hardisk tomorrow.. As far as i can see all the files are still compact when running in safe mode so i planned to copy all the contents to the new hdd.. More or less cloning it.. Will that be fine? If there are bad sectors will it affect the new hdd and is it gonna affect my computer once i remove current hdd and insert the new one? Thank u for advices

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
That should be fine. Some of your files may be corrupted if part of the data exists on the bad sectors. Unfortunately, that is not really avoidable. It will not affect your computer with a new hard drive, though.

After you do the cloned backup, you can try using Rescue Kit Free Edition | PARAGON Software Group - free partition software, hard disk partitioning to recover the files. I emphasize after because the recovery software may not recover your files as well and there is the risk that the bad drive will be in worse shape after the clone. It is important to finish your current backup before trying any other recovery.

okay thank you so much will keep you posted ... oh btw... my sis just told me that her folder (which im so freaked out that its missing) .... is with her... she backed it up and delete it from mine without telling me...

lol i was happy and also mad at her at the same time for making me stay all nigh long... and as far as i know... nothing is missing... all the files are still intact (at least the ones that is inside the soon-to-be-dead hdd) ... so im gonna copy step-by-step in safe mode so that i know if any of the files are failed during the copying process..

so is it okay i do chkdsk on the new hardisk after complete copying every single thing and will it fix any bad sectors due to copying from the old hardisk (if any)? i really want to start anew and fresh... im traumatic ryte now thats y im worried to much and asked so many questions.. i hope u dont mind.. :)
