Please help!

I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 7 home premium from Vista. I have the following computer.. I'm getting stuck at 6% (not 62%).

Dell laptop XPS m1530
Intel core duo 2.40 ghz
4th ram
64-bit

Now i can no longer see my DVD and i see a message "could not load driver for DVD. I'm so upset...checking for solutions does not work.

I checked compatibility and it was confirmed that I could install 64-bit windows 7 home premium, but I have tried 3 times and it gets stuck in the same place

Hello, and welcome!

Try removing all but one stick of RAM, and see if that helps.

Another thing you can try: boot into Windows, and then copy all the files from the DVD into a folder. Then take out the DVD, and run the setup.exe file you find.

I will ask the mods to move this to a new thread, just as a heads-up.

Thanks Jonathan for replying so quickly. I finally found the DVD after powering off instead of restarting. Please forgive my ignorance but when you say remove the ram do you mean physically, or is there a way to "turn off" some ram. ....(now don't LOL too much).

Is the Windows 7 DVD you are doing the install with one you burned yourself or is it one you purchased pre-prepared, if it's one you burned yourself have a look at the info below?

   Information

If the Windows 7 install disk is one you burned yourself it may be a bad burn and needs to be done again, if so this would be the first thing to try.

Use the free ISO burner at the link below to burn another at a speed of now more than 4x and select to let the program to verify the disk before it finishes.

That's an upgrade disk you have and you want to upgrade Vista to Windows 7 without starting all over, is that what you are trying to do; have a look at this tutorial?

I recommend just copying the files over to the hard drive, and running the installation from there.

That should work great, assuming the disc itself is working well.

As for the RAM, you can't turn it off; you'd have to pull it out physically. You might try copying the files to the hard drive first, as opening the case may void your warranty.

Just checking this..............Your Vista is a 64-bit install and also your Win 7 upgrade disk is 64 bit, correct?

Have you tried booting the DVD to do a clean install? It may work better than trying to run it from Windows. Be sure to back up your files and gather your program installers.
