Hi,

Hoping the experts on the forums can help me out with my BSOD issue. Silly me took it to the shop to try and get them to fix my error only to be told they couldn't replicate my system crashes, but most likely it's caused by the video card. At least they didn't charge me anything.

I've attached details of my last 3 crashes, 2 of them are d1's and one is a 1e (which I don't recall seeing before).

Many thanks in advance

My system specs are
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Processor - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80GHz
Motherboard - Asus M4A89GTD PRO
Memory - Kingston KVR1333D3N9K2 1333MHz DDR3
Graphics Card(s)- Asus ATI Eah6770 pci-e 2.1 1gb 128-BIT gdddr5, 850/4800MHz
Monitor(s) Displays - Acer X233H

Hard Drives - Western Digital 500GB 3.5" SATA2 32MB Cache 7200rpm

Hello Krisech, Welcome to SF!

You've got quite a lot of different things that could cause these problems... some of them seem to have been around for a long while...?

You have a SmartDoctor (ASUS) install from 2002. Obsolete and not W7 compatible, please de-install.

You have multiple old (too old) DEM.Graphics drivers which are part of ATI's Catalyst suite. De-install fully and download latest driver for your card from ATI direct, no Catalyst.

One of your dumps blames USBPORT.sys. As a test, disable all USB devices in your Devices settings.

Please post back your results.

Thanks MvdB,

Yes, my problems started in December 2010, but I was only getting the occassional BSOD, In June, it happened every second day which motivated me to get something done.

I've done as you have recommended except for disablng the USB devices. I've kept this running as the system is used purely for gaming, and it only ever crashes when I'm in a game and I need the USB devices working in there.

I'll let you know how it all goes.

Many thanks for your help

I'll have a look, it seems like it.
I know you do not want to disable all usb indefinitely, but you really need to update the driver. The temporary disable is only to prove or disprove if that's the cause....

Thanks for your ongoing help. If I disable the USB won't I have to wait to see if the system crashes again before knowing if that is the problem?

Or do I just need to disable them, update the driver, and then enable them? If this is all I need to do, shall I just get them from the ASUS site?

Thanks again

Both line of thought are valid... As you do not have a BSOD that you can simply trigger by something you do, you need to try something, wait and see and hope that was it.

Getting the newest is always a good idea, the manufacturer puts in the effort to improve, obviously because it needed improving :D

Turning off USB devices sometimes helps to pinpoint a problem that is difficult to find otherwise. In my own case I have a smartcard reader that causes my system to freeze randomly somehow. My drivers are fine, I have USB3.0 external storage running... but 1 (!) of my 6 USB HW connections causes a problem. In my case, an updated driver alone doesn't fix the problem...

In your case, updating the driver is fine. If you still get BSODs, you still need to turn off and check USB devices, one by one... (that is if you have no BSOD's when all usb is off)

You have multiple USB devices. What you can try is disable one by one and see which one causes the crash.... It'll just take some time.

I'm disconnecting one at a time, and running a few apps to try and get the system to crash.

Is it OK just to unplug devices whilst I do this?

EDIT: Ran my game with the "suspected" device being the only thing connected to the PC and it crashed with the 1e error after about 20 minutes.

I've now been running the game for about 90 minutes with everything but this plugged in and so far so good.

This is the prime suspect at the moment http://www.leobodnar.com/products/SLI-PRO/
Is there a simple fix if this is the issue, or do I just have to bin the item :-( I couldn't find anyone having a similar issue.

What you need to do to be sure is to de-install the usb device and its software completely. Assuming you have the original, you can always re-install later when you found what the real problem is. It is NOT enough to simply disconnect the usb device.

OK, I de-installed the SLI-Pro and ran a game all night on AI control, woke up this morning and everything was still running perfectly. Re-installed the SLI-Pro, went into a game, got BSOD within an hour.

Disconnected "connector 2" from the SLI-Pro and have been running a game in AI control for 4 hours without a problem. So I'm guessing there is a loose wire or something on one of my buttons which has caused my issues ? ? ? ?

Anyway, it all (hopefully) seems to be resolved now.

Many thanks for your help MvdB, I never would have narrowed down the issue (if this is what it is) without your patient assistance.

My pleasure and glad it's resolved... I'm not really into the SLI-PRO hardware so it's difficult to help you there..
If you're happy with this thread being resolved, could you please mark it as solved at the top of the threa? Thx and hope you get the SLI-pro to work as you want it to!
