OK... 1st off I'm no noob! I know that a clean install is preferred and that's what I've done since DOS/Win3.x days... but...

I attended a MS Launch event yesterday in San Diego and the MS rep told us how successful his Vista to Win 7 upgrade went I'm very tempted. Yes, he... like myself said he doesnt like or perform "in place" upgrades, but he had to try it.

So, by a show of hands... er votes, of those who did "in place" upgrades lets get responses on how it went.

This is only for people who performed an upgrade directly from Vista to Windows 7... not intended for those who formatted and did a clean install. Nor is it intended as a thread to complain or gripe about your student downloads, etc... there are threads for that too!

Several reports on here right now of people whose in-place stalls at startup. Need to know if they didn't wait long enough to get it done, or for rollback offer. The crucial thing as usual is that they are backed up, because advising them to then do a clean install instead (after trying to start it up) is always the best advice anyway.

Dam... I wanted to add that into poll.

No way to edit a poll?

I've told about my positive in-place upgrades quite often here on SF, about the last session here. Here's my What to do before an in-place upgrade checklist:

  • Update all the drivers and BIOS
  • Restore BIOS to factory defaults
  • Uninstall software and applications you know for sure are incompatible with Seven
  • Clean your system (trash, temp etc.)
  • Disconnect all external hardware (USB, Firewire, HDMI, DVI), leave only mouse, keyboard and one display
  • Get a pot of coffee, a bottle of whisky and something to read nearby. It might take hours...
I think this negative hype around in-place upgrade is at least partly unfounded. All the years working in IT, installing new OS's and taking care of of both my own and other peoples computers, I have never had a problem to upgrade.

I voted ZERO problems, of course.

Personally I'd go for a clean install. In my experience Windows need to be dismembered every year or two anyway, the registry gets so clogged up, and I've heard reports of 7 running very sluggishly after an upgrade installation, not too mention tales of data loss, failed rollbacks, getting stuck at 62% etc. Either way I would definately back up my important data.

Leap of Faith....

I went ahead and against my better judgement did the "in place" upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate... it took just under 2 hours and finished fine!

I thought I was gonna have issues with my Brother HL-2040 printer, but Win7 fixed the issue automatically once I turned on the printer!

Everything seems to work fine... I will update as I test apps!

I know, I know... that's why I prefaced the whole thread with:

Sure :D just giving my two cents. I haven't tried an upgrade myself, but I've heard quite afew bad things. And I would point out that the MS rep's upgrade would go smoothly - he is trying to show off the product.

Glad to hear yours went well though. :)
