Poor Performance from 32bit to 64 bit Graphics

I just made the switch to Windows 7 64 bit and I must admit I do like it much better. An interesting problem I have noticed though is that my graphics 3D Gaming subscore dropped from a 6.9 to a 2.0, which doesn't make sense. I have an ATI Radeon 4850 with the latest catalyst 9.6, and I cannot understand why going 64 bit would do this.

Thanks,
TheWiz

Same problem here. I had a gaming graphics score of 4.9 on 32 bit and has decreased to 3.1 on 64bit. :rolleyes:

Turns out I did it like two more times and it went back to normal, I think it has to do something with WDDM drivers and which version it likes best. Its choosey.

You talking abt the 3d gaming in wei? If so have you refreshed it? i cant see that card getting a 2.0. I have an integrated 256 video and my 3d gaming is 3.3 so your has to be higher.

Try the easy stuff first if not we will try more difficult things

Did you install 64bit graphics drivers?

Yes, I verified that I installed the 64 bit version. I think it may have taken a while for the new catalyst drivers to take effect because now my graphics ratings have gone from a 2.0 to a 6.5 and now when I play Forces of COrruption it isn't buffering full load.

Its just weird, Hopefully its good now.

Thanks,

Hi all,

Upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit this morning from Vista 32-bit. I'm having some problems with the graphics.. Before I got an overall Windows Experience Rating of 5.0 and now my lowest sub score rating is 3.4 (Gaming Graphics).

Before, when I played games such as Killing-floor I could run it in the highest settings very smoothly, and now it jerks a lot.

Rough spec of my laptop;

-Intel Core Duo T6500 (2.1Ghz, 800Mhz FSB)
-ATI Radeon HD 4670 (1gb)
-4 GB Memory

I've updated my ATI drivers using this;

Code:
Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

I also noticed this;

Well there you go. vid driver cannot start means WEI was run using vga hence the lower score. We need to investigate why the driver cannot start.

It might be in device manager under details, or in event viewer.

You could un-install the current driver and let win 7 find one for you.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have tried uninstalling the driver for ATI and then reinstalling them again via the win7 update driver feature in device manager. However, it still remains the same and states that the "The device cannot start (code 10)"

This is veryyyyyyyyyyy annoying...

Stop using Windows Update. Just uninstall everything you had, go to ATI's site, and install the latest catalyst suite. Then refresh your WEI.

Also, make sure that your power cables are secured etc on the card.

My Score Went Up

Win 7 seems to favor nVidia Graphics Crds because the Drivers are updated monthly if not twice a month. My system Screams Win 7 64 Bit. EVGA 9600GT

Just a quick note. When uninstalling graphic drivers I always use either driver sweeper or driver cleaner to make sure I have removed every bit of the existing driver before installing the new one. Fabe
