Popping out of applications and into... nowhere?

I'm no OS expert, so I can't say definitively that this is an OS problem, but it seems to be.

So imagine I'm running an app, any app, let's say word. Suddenly, and not because I've accidentally clicked anything else, I'm typing into thin air. The app window is de - highlighted (y'know, not active) and not taking any more data. I have to click back into the app for it to be active again. It happens frequently, with many apps, and even seems to be kicking me offline. It's happened 5 times since I started writing this post.

I tried out of curiosity to do a ctrl+n or ctrl+f or ctrl+anything to find out where I am. Nothing happens until I click back into something, whether it's the app or desktop or whatever.

Anyone who can help me out with this gets a big fat digital hug.

There have been several forum members posting about this issue.

It is usually some app (perhaps one without a visible window) that causes the issue.
