Hello everyone and first off thank you for coming on to this post to try and help me.

So my PC 9 times out of 10 will boot just fine, but on the other 1 time it gets past the login screen to the desktop and then the icons don't load and I get the windows 7 busy cursor, resulting in having to force the PC to turn off with the power button reboot and then it's fine?

I googled this and it came up with a lot of hard drive related errors, I've only had the computer just under 6 months! the HDD should not be failing yet!! So I am now stuck on what to do, I disabled services and startup items all but essentials in MSCONFIG and now what? it still happens... :(

Any suggestions to harddrive tools/possible fixes would be very greatly appreciated, thank you.

Check the drive with the the manufacturers diagnostic utility. Don't dismiss the possibility that a drive has errors just because it is new. There are 2 times in the life of any manufactured product when it is most likely to fail: when it is relatively new and when it is nearing the end of it's useful life.

The drive may not be the problem but even the suspicion of hard drive failure must be taken seriously.

Be sure you have a backup of all important files while files of particular importance need 2 or backup copies. Many people wait until there is a serious problem. Then it may be too late.

The WD diagnostics is DOS only and I don't have a diskette that it mentions it must run from

Ran a S.M.A.R.T test using data life guard from WD and it says that it has passed.

What else could cause the desktop to hang when the computer boots?

Other things:
Scan for viruses/malware
From command prompt with admin acct/rights:
SFC /scannow
&
chkdsk /R

I am awaiting a new HD myself, I am due for a replacement just based on time: Every 4 years is what I recommend for system heavy users, will be nice to swap out a 500g for a 2TB. :D
