Hi - I know there is a BSOD forum, and maybe this goes there - not sure. If this needs to be moved, please feel free.
I have just gotten a new MB and CPU, and am having an issue booting. I use W7 64 Ult., and the last time I updated was about two weeks ago.
The old was an ASUS P6T and i7 960 3.2 GHz chip. The new is an ASUS P9x79-LE and i7 4820k. I can get it to POST, and I can get to the W7 splash screen, but I can't get to the desktop. I get a quick BSOD - it flashes for about 1/2 second, and therefore have no idea what it says.
Here's the thing... Before the new MB arrived, I called Crucial, and asked if the RAM I have is compatible (bought the RAM directly from them some months back). This is the RAM that was in the P6T, which I never had an issue with. The tech asked me to read part of the number printed on the side of the module, and then he proceeds to tell me that a) there has been a new revision since my purchase, and b) I shouldn't have a problem, but there is a small chance I might. No worries - they will swap the modules.
In the meantime, I wanted to see if someone with more experience in this area than I has any other ideas.
Currently, the MB is sitting on my table in my kitchen (hw floors), on the box, and on the anti-static bag it was shipped in. I have both power connectors to the MB from the PSU, the vid card with one VGA cable connected to the monitor, one SATA HD (OS) connected, and the fan/heatsink firmly secured. I have tried four of the six modules that I have; I have even tried two at a time... I am almost positive that they do not need to be installed in pairs, but gave that a shot in case. It's definitely not the HD. No other cards in any slots, and no USB devices plugged. Always the same result. W7 splash screen, then the quick BSOD flash, and then back to the ASUS BIOS screen.
Common sense - especially after the convo with the Crucial tech - dictates that it is the RAM. But again - I am looking to see if anyone has any other ideas... is there anything else I can try? Something I may have overlooked?
