Windows 7 Public Beta Soon

There have been several reports that indicate that a public beta of Windows 7 would be available in early January. What’s more, according to several sources (ZDNet’s Ed Bott, Internet News.com Andy Patrizio and last week WinInfo’s Paul Thurrott) Windows 7 will ship this summer (a June 2009 shipping date is being mentioned) - way earlier than Microsoft has (so far) indicated.

Some people are thinking that a June 2009 ship date is not likely. This is roughly 31 months after Vista went RTM (Release To Manufacturing). I’ll just point out that Microsoft shipped Windows XP only 20 months after Windows 2000, so a 31 month development cycle for Windows 7 would certainly be a possibility. Most people will remember the painful Windows Vista development cycle, which took 63 months from the day Windows XP went RTM to its own RTM. Microsoft is determined not to let that happen again.

One should also keep in mind that the changes from Windows Vista to Windows 7 are comparable to the changes Microsoft made when it went from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, so although the beta cycle for Windows 7 looks to be very short, it looks plausible.

i think MS had a too long Dev cycle with vista (not that it wasnt needed for a next generation OS which really is..)
i think as we look at past trends i think one of the main reasons vista "failed" in the begining to capture most of the market share is because MS took to long in their dev cycle and out came out a product with missing bits....
if MS delivers W7 with stability that these alpha's have... it dosent even have to be feature complete...
just a few necessary things on the desktop (i wouldnt call aero necessary but its a nice touch...lol
(maybe a First time Wizard so that users have the Choice of what to download (IM's is an example) in the beginning it would be beneficial to everyone except the server maintainers...lol

i also think they promised too much....

yeah but they never mentioned (or at least i dont remember) that that many features where removed....

the one that annoyed me the most was the boot screen....lol
and the ability of not changing it (in x64) easily without *paid* software

As much as I'd like to get the finished product, I'd rather wait and have the *finished* product than have it come out early with stuff missing.

Hi All

To be totally honest I don't think M$ can afford to release Windows 7 as any thing other than "finished". With all the FUD that has affected Vista (even though it was untrue), Windows 7 has to have the WOW and work out of the box. The cryptic "Windows 7 will be released when it's finished" from M$ is IMHO a hint that they won't rush this release, although with the quality of what we've seen so far they may well beat the official target of first quater 2010, which would be another plus

They must know that not having all their ducks in a row at the release of seven would be devastating to their bottom line over the long haul. There will be enough complaining from the folks moving from XP to Seven without having stuff broken or missing. I'm sure they don't want to go through that again.

One of the foremost reasons people hate Vista. That and it wouldn't run on thier 386SX25 with 2mb Ram...

they took things out broke a few things...
but 7 has to be eyecandy+speed...

Well, here is the thing - I always use the 'Show OS Boot information' setting in MSConfig - and Vista RTM it flew by, but on Vista SP1 it slowed down - tremendously. The OS itself was a lot faster after that part of the boot, including application timing and whatnot....

However, after I installed W7 as a second OS in a dual boot scenario, a curious thing happened - the OS Boot info screen for ***VISTA*** sped back up to (or even surpassing) the speed I encountered with the original Vista RTM.

Also, I'd like to make one comment - not all the FUD surrounding Vista was untrue - it is definitely a slower OS because it is more massive - but at least in Vista I can do things like kill and restart things like the VDDM and explorer.exe without having to reboot the OS - I mean, c'mon, I have to reboot XP if I switch from SLI to non SLI and vice versa!!!!

maybe using w7 boot files???
and yes i know vista is not the angel we all know 7 is...lol
but they were too lenient on the vista specs...
i remember installing vista ultimate on my desktop
x3100 while yes it does employ the WDDM driver for aero i turned it off...

vista to me is tangled cables on the inside while in 7 they tidied it up on the inside (they indirectly said that the cleaned the kernel code...)

I think it has *everything* to using the W7 boot files....

And it is not just the specs (for the Works with Vista logo certification program) that hurt Vista - it also includes things like removing half of the features that made Longhorn fun to test, and selling an OS that they *knew* had issues - major issues - to the public. I swear I almost went back to RC 1 after I had been running RTM for about 2 months...until SP1 came out RTM was continually getting reinstalled to the tune to once every other month....
