You normally wouldn't consider this a compatibility issue unless it worked in an older OS.
In many cases applications that were not designed to work this way will not. This is for a wide variety of reasons. There is no general way to make this work and in many cases it will not be practical.
Some applications will run this way. It all depends on the details of the application.
