I'm thinking about building a HTPC and using Media Center to control everything. I have a projector for playing movies and a speaker system throughout the house for playing music (at the moment just from a radio).

Is it possible to have Media Center use only the HDMI output on my computer for movie audio and the 3.5mm output jacks for music? And would it be possible to play them at the same time?

It seems like it could be possible since the HDMI is controlled by the video card and has audio capabilities these days and is totally seperate from the sound card.

Yes, depending on the HDMI driver. Most will. HDMI usually shows as a separate device.
