Got it to run a tidbit better, hit that 4GHz barrier. Not to stable with tests at this speed, but the PC runs.

Thanks Zalith, CPU-Z shows 1.488 there, but I have it set to 1.5V in BIOS. Core Temp says 1.33V:sarc:

I have bumped it up a notch to 1.54V, hopefully it won't crash and burn. I saw one forum where a guy got it to 4.2 with some water cooling. I had already seen the same Xbit experiment, Essenbe linked me to it a few days ago and I've been looking all over for info. Problem with this #$%^&*(! mobo id I have no HT adjustment, it defaults to 10x of the FSB frquency.

Yeah, the voltages always vary slightly from what you set in the BIOS... I'm certain the voltage and frequency settings work on the pirates' code (from The Curse of the Black Pearl): They're more like guidelines than actual rules...

Pity about the HT link though, but I suppose unless you're trying to set new OC records it's a pretty minor issue. Pretty sure you still have more OC options there than my Athlon 6000+ and XFX board though... Lol.

Ok so heres my overclock, I feel I have been more successful with the GPU than the CPU



Graphics default 550mhz engine, 1375mhz Shader, 400mhz GDDR
Graphics Overclock 700mhz Engine, 1573mhz Shader, 524Mhz GDDR

CPU Default 2500mhz
CPU Overclock 3213mhz

DDR2 1066mhz > 1071Mhz keeping 5,5,5,15 timings.

All on air, had to bump the CPU to 1.45v which isn't massive but still throws the temp about as high as I dare.

When I had my Q8300 I could not for the life of me get it past 3.1ghz, tried 3 mobo's, endless settings but I just gave up in the end.

Well I dialed the FSB up to 428, Loosened the FSB strap to northbridge enough to keep my ram as close to stock as possible (1071 instead of 1066) then convinced it to keep the 7.5 multiplier (which it insisted on dropping to 6 all the time) Luckily the Asus P5QD Turbo is loaded with more overclocking options than you could ver need, with a few minor adjustments to memory handling and disabling spread spectrum. Keeping the ram at it's rated 2.2v and pushing to 1.45v for the chip, I turned up the NB voltage slightly too but kept it well in the safe parameters and everything was good.

Previously I struggled to keep stable above 3Ghz, just those extra bios options that pulled it out of the hat for me.

I've finally hit the point where a 24/7 4.0ghz+ with no power saving is pointless for me. I thought I'd give overclocking with all power saving features enabled for a change.




3.8ghz 12hrs prime95 blend stable. 6hrs Large FFT stable too.



And then the bloody PC froze the moment I closed tests and temp monitors


Oh yeah, temps aren't stellar because I've got the fans on resistors. I'm happy to sacrifice temps for quiet now.

I've culled over 50% of the rest of the fans when I replaced the Haf with the Lian Li. Bugger all difference in temps overall.

(It sucks though because I bought some Noctua NFP-12's and Nexus Real Silents to replace the noisy LED Zalmans in the Haf a week before I got the Lian Li. The V1020 has 4 case fans - 3 are bloody 140mm without 120mm mounts. I can't use most of them. I have to buy some more. The stock Lian Li front 140mm's in particular are indeed cheap and cheerful.)

Goood smartyeyeball, I can't run Prime95 on any test without getting a restart after 5-30 minutes.
RAM is fairly good although it has seen over 23,000 MBs

If you're crashing 5-30 mins in, my immediate thought is insufficient vcore. If BSOD with 101 or 124 error, that's also indicating vcore.

Rule of thumb - Start with CPU, then work on the Ram. Makes it easier to troubleshoot.

67.9 Tcase - 100c core before throttling/shutdown. Anything over 90c during stress testing is when you can panic

Aside from my mega attempts, I'm comfortable with anything under 85c during stress testing. Real world, max your likely to see is 60-65c.

I've had the temps lower with much more vcore, but I'm digging the quiet and am happy with the trade off



I'm basically trying to find a stable performance/cost operation setup for when I go to 2011 socket and give my sister the old bits. She doesn't need a 24/7 OC apparently

Thanks Patrick, indeed I bumped the Vcore to 1.575 and its using 1.522 and I have it running at 4.2 GHZ, if now I can make it stable. At these setting RAM is back up to 1600MHz which is stock, at 7-8-7-24T. This snip is with Photoshop X64 running.

If it's not stable, try lowering the RAM frequency to 1333MHz. If that doesn't do it then loosen the timings a little.

Some people have stability issues with AMD CPU IMC (integrated memory controller)at RAM frequencies above 1333MHz.

Hopefully AMD has fixed that issue by now.
