Potential New Card???

I am thinking of buying this card EVGA 01G-P3-1430-LR GeForce GT 430 Video Card - 1024MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, DVI, HDMI, VGA DirectX 11 http://http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6792880&Sku=E145-0430 I wanted to get an opinion on it. The price is good. I am upgrading from a PNY GeForce 210 512mb. I mainly use PC for HD movies and video encoding and decoding. Very few games but some. Is this card worth the money??

I am not sure if it matters or not but the old card is DirectX 9. I want the new card for the improved GPU. But Am new to graphic cards that support HD. So any info is welcome.

You wouldn't expect the card I'm looking at to last long? Why is that? The card you linked is almost three times as much. I have a limited budget. Why Radeon over Nvidia? Like I said I am not up on which cards are better and which are junk. Or what I should be looking for other than the speed of it and the RAM.

A 5850 is overkill if all you want to do is hd movies and casual gaming. Having reviewed the gt430 here it seems as if the card will be suitable for all your requirements.

The only difference between nvidia and ati are the users........ both chip manufacturers are as equal as each other.......

I assume that Ivan meant that Newegg would sell out of the card that he listed soon. (I'm not sure why. The price wasn't spectacularly low.)

I don't know which card to recommend. The GT 430 looks like a good choice. I's probably greatly superior to your 210. The 430 looks like it's significantly better than the 520, which is newly released at about the same price.

The TigerDirect link didn't work for me. Newegg has the 430 available from several manufacturers. Some were quite cheap (albeit with a rebate).

The GTX 260 will put some hair on your chest, it's a tank. Im very satisfied with mine and i highly recommend it.

At a hair under $65 still several steps over the 430....If you are determined to go with the 430 try and find one with 512 ram no need paying for ram that will never be used....

I am not a fan boy of any brand...price/performance is what I go by....if the prices flip so will I

That 5850 is a much better card for $10 more. But both are still more than the OP requires. His post is kinda vague, doesn't give specifics like apps he uses for encoding or games he does play though.

My apologies. I don't know what I looked at; $139 is a low price for a 5850.

Looks like Tomrdiedrich's power supply ought to be able to handle any of the cards people have mentioned. (650W, 44A at +12V, two 6 pin, two 6+2 pin PCI-E power.)

What is the reason for everyone in favor of Radeon cards? Is there a problem with Nvidia? I like the fact that nvidia offers the 3d support. Not that it will last long. (probly will fade like HD dvds) I do like the fact that that card that was suggested offers HD sound also. It is really hard to compare these cards. It is not exactly comparing apples to apples. More like apples to plums! lol Is there a site anywhere that gives the raw comparison of the cards?

Video cards are very confusing with all the different numbers/letters....The reason I know so much is a few days ago the Wife said her computer was reporting that the video card driver quit working....ok....update driver and start looking for a card just in case the old 8500gt is going bad....I spent all day reading reviews, pricing cards, because I wanted a stronger card than my 4890, so Son can get that card and my Wife his 4830....turns out the problem was the tv tuner card

Look at a GTX 460 (with discounts can be had for between 125-179), 1GB GDDR5, 336 Cuda Cores, DirectX11...quite powerful, but you won't go broke buying it.

The only problem is the prices....bang for buck....

I doubt you will find a direct review comparing the 430 vs 5850 5770 or even the 260, because it would sum up to "you got smoked"....the chart is the best tool I have found to compare cards....Tom's Hardware tests a lot of cards, and they will hurt your feelings....

i honestly wouldn't go for a 3d card yet, the tech is not new by any stretch of the imagination which should tell you something about how well it is really being recieved by the public, 3d is not something that will be taken up the way many expect, me personaly will avoid it as i get headaches watching anything in 3d, and watching a whole crowd of people leave a cinema clutching the side of there heads from headaches makes me wonder about the health effects as well.

ati frankly offer better cards for the money you spend you can not get a comparable nvidia card at the same price which is why some here are trying to point you in that direction.

but lets get serious for a second and look at your choices, you say you have a limited budget but how limited is it? the ati 6850 is hardly expencive and wipes the floor with alot of the mentioned cards.
the 5770 comes in more than one variation be it with a fan or without so that presents extra choices for you.

you need to look at what you really need and then make a choice to invest a bit more for a better card to last you longer.

i doubt there is a card on the market right now that won't do what you need virtually all of them are good enough for what your after.

Well I am trying to stay under $150. And it is not that I cannot afford it. It is I have a hard time justifying anything more than that. I tried encoding a movie the other day on my pc. While it was encoding I tried to watch a movie. My little geforce 210 was not having that!! LOL it got real hot just from encoding and when I tried to watch movies it just would not play smoothly!!

I do not play enough video games to worry about them. My 210 will play them just not very many fps. It is about encoding while watching a movie. That is the whole goal here. Then I have a extra card to put with my extra ram and extra psu for a lighter weight pc to stream movies to in my bedroom!! But really I would like to do encoding while movie watchin. And at the same time I of course want to get most bang for my buck. The only reason I keep leaning towards nvidia is that is what I am familiar with and used to.

What are the dimensions of these Radeon cards? I am not totally sure if they will fir in my case!! I am going to have to do some detailed mesuring. But the Radeon website does not list the dimensions. So if anyone has on of these cards plz measure and post the size!! Like for the 6850 or the 5770
